REFLECTION NO. 1: INVOLVING STUDENTS IN CLASSROOM

In a young learners which have definitely a short attention span, it is challenging

for the teachers to keep them on track. I actually guilty to this scenario as I've remember

back when I was in elementary grades I usually pretend that I'am listening to our teacher by

looking at her without blinking of eyes as I watched her talk in front, but the truth, I doesn't

even absorb any words that she was saying instead I'm day dreaming or just zoning out. It's

my loss after all but I can't help it, now I'm here thinking of a ways to prevent that to my

future students. Anyway as I've read the article, it gives me an idea that starting class with a

mind warm-up is very essential giving them motivation to catch their attention. After

catching their attention make sure to maintain their focus and kill the dead-time by

engaging them to various activities that requires their participation. Keeping the classroom

lively as they dance, sing, play games and such to achieve active-learning among the young

learners. Throwing jokes or funny stories at the same time is also a way to avoid boredom

but it should be related to the lesson. Eliminating dead-time is big achievement as we watch

and observe our student learn together actively.

REFLECTION NO. 2: A CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT TIPS

As said in the article, management challenges are heightened in the Language

classroom. The more they need to speak, the more they should encourage to engage the

students in an activity that requires a balance curriculum while achieving the goals of

teacher and students learning. Learning second language and speaking skills of students are

probably a complicated process without proper plan and flow especially to the young

learners. As a future elementary teacher, I think it is essential to create an effective course

plan by understanding the curriculum together by maintaining the smooth flows of activities

to incorporate everyday to the student's learning process. I shall scaffold them by making it

easier at the beginning but as the time goes by they should learn in a new level until they

can achieve whatever the target goal on that course. It is also a good idea to consider the

balanced group or pair-collaborative learning to minimize the classroom sized and to be

more manageable. I realized also from the article that aside from physical environment, the

body language of a teacher manifest strong help in teaching, wearing the different

character on our facial expressions like smiling, confuse, shock and such depending on what

we are saying just to catch their attention. At the end of the day, we should always prioritize

the students' learning on whatever strategies we are planning to apply.

REFLECTION NO. 3: 5 ACTIVITIES TO MAKE YOUR CLASSROOM MORNING ROUTINE MORE

PRODUCTIVE

I sometimes believe that your mood in the whole day depends on your mood in

the beginning of the day - morning. For one to function well we should start our day in one

interesting way and that is I believe one of the responsibility of a teacher to their students.

As to prepare their mind and body for the rest of the day. The 5 activities suggested on the

article are morning message, morning meeting, question of the day, morning packet and

morning yoga which I realized that good for student's mental health. It is like opening a

conversation to express their thoughts to others and knowing themselves more. It is also

important to the student to let them feel that they can let out of their worries or sadness by

doing this activities. It also I think take the lead to know their classmates better as they

share and exchange experiences, thoughts and stories to each other. This will be one of the

foundation to positively start the school day fresh and I will surely love to try it in the future

to my class.

Keeping Children's Attention

In this video, the speaker Joan Kang Shin of University of Maryland, Baltimore

emphasized that very young learners have short attention spans and can be easily

distracted, they change their focus easily. She also point-out that it's important to fill every

movement of the class with an engaging activity to keep them active and motivated, the

question is how effective it is?

In this video, she suggested to use a talking stick, wherein if the stick is with you, you have

the privilege to speak and you need to pass it on to othes so that he/she now have the

chance to speak. I think this particular activity has advantage and disadvantage. The

advantage of talking stick is that the one who's holding the stick can encourage to speak

while his classmates are keeping the attention to her/him only. The student can express

his/her thought not bothered by the noise from his/her classmates. It can probably give all

the learners a chance to talk one by one. However, the disadvantage of talking stick, it

requires a lot of time as when the student either don't have any answer or he/she needs

more time to think of his/her thoughts. Probably, others can be distracted while waiting for

their turn or the previous student to hold the stick first will lost their interest because they

have nothing to anticipate. We need to consider a lot of things or factors before choosing an

activity that suited to our discussion and learners.
