Human Behavior in Organization Loribelle R. Ocenar, PhD

Reaction Paper 1
Topic: The Changing Environment of Organizations

I. Summary
 The environment of modern businesses are greatly affected by
globalization. There has been a significant growth in the volume
of international trade and it continues to grow at a very rapid
pace.

Basically there are four common reasons for this growth:

a) communication and transportation have advanced
dramatically over the past several decades;
b) businesses have expanded internationally to increase their
markets;
c) firms are moving into international markets to control costs,
especially to reduce labor costs; and
d) many organizations have become international in response
to competition. There are numerous cross-cultural
differences and similarities that affect behavior within
organizations.

 The changing environment of business presents both

opportunities and challenges for managers today. There are five
important environmental forces that affects the organization, to
wit; globalization, diversity, technology, ethics and corporate
governance, and new employment relationships.
II. Critique
 Globalization is a worldwide trend through which economies in
the world open their borders and connect to each other. This
allows companies to no longer be imprisoned in their borders
that now they can implement a wide range of business activities
around the world. This is true to the fact that businesses fight for
survival, the constant pressure, and the need to preserve and
strengthen the market position.

 Globalization brings diverse people working together in the

organization. Diversity in workforce will created a large shift in
organization behavior because these people belongs to different
nation and different culture, values, beliefs, and ethics.

 Managing diverse people gives huge challenge to the leaders in

the organizations to keep diversified workforce as a whole unit.
Hence, cross-cultural management must give more emphasis
on recognizing cultural difference, respecting people’s right to
differ and reconciling issues differences will create.

III. Learning Insight

 Our organization is operating only within the country. As the
Supreme Audit Institution, we are mandated to audit the
transactions of various Government organizations. While we
only operate locally, there are times that we collaborate with
International State Auditors for the United Nation’s Audit, and
Embassy Audit that allows diverse auditors working together for
a specific engagement. With this setting, it is inevitable that
there may be occasions where conflict arises. This is not usually
a major issue for us Filipinos because our virtues allows us to
easily connect and cooperate with other nationalities.
