 Tell the benefits of separating mixtures from products in
community. (S6MT-Ig-j-3)

OBJECTIVE: At the end of this module, you will be able to:

 Identify processes/activities done in school that separates
components of different mixtures.
 Tell the benefits of segregating component of wastes in
school.
 Identify processes/activities done in the farm that separates
components of different mixtures.
 Tell the benefits of segregating through picking, winnowing
and threshing in the farm.

NUMBER OF DAYS: 4 Days

BACKGROUND:

The unsound management of solid waste is one of the most serious

environmental problems, given its high negative impact on natural resources and
human health. Therefore, it is necessary to foster a culture at schools, aimed at
alleviating the environmental and social problem caused by trash.

Most places you go to will have some form of waste segregation. Your school
may have a bin for paper and cardboard, even your house should have some form of
waste segregation. But how important is it to put the right waste in the right bins?

The first reason is it is legally required. Under the Waste Regulations 2011, you
must segregate paper, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass at source unless it is
technically or economically unfeasible. Under the same regulations, you should
implement the waste hierarchy; reduce, reuse, recycle, other recovery and disposal.
By law, you should implement this hierarchy and segregation helps with recycling in
particular. Waste segregation is included in law because it is much easier to recycle.
Effective segregation of wastes means that less waste goes to landfill which makes it
cheaper and better for people and the environment. It is also important to segregate
for public health.

GENERAL DIRECTIONS:

Module 8 contains fifteen (15) pages which provides a variety of interesting

activities for individual practice and an answer sheet. The following are important
reminders in using this module:

1. Use this module with care. Do not write anything on each page of the module.
Use a separate sheet of paper for your answers to the different activities or
tasks.
2. Read carefully the Guide Card before proceeding to the next activities.
3. Read carefully the direction/instruction of each activity before doing the task.
4. Finish the first activity before doing the next one.
5. Return the module on the agreed time to your teacher or adviser after
answering all the activities.

Mixtures can be separated using a variety of techniques. In school, there are
some form of separating waste. Others may have a bin for paper, cardboard and
plastics,

2
even your classroom should have some form of waste segregation. These
segregations have two types:
1. Biodegradable -waste or garbage that can be broken down or decomposed
2. Non-biodegradable – wastes or garbage that cannot be broken down or
decomposed.
But how important is it to put the right waste in the right bins?

PROCESS:
Waste sorting is the process by which waste is separated into different elements.
... This is called "waste segregation" which means dividing waste into dry and wet.
Dry waste includes wood and related products, metals and glass.

BENEFITS:
By means of separating mixtures, students in schools can distinguish
biodegradable from non-biodegradable. Recyclable materials can be a source of
income from others. Thus, proper waste disposal is one of the benefits in school.

GUIDE CARD 2
Lesson 3 & 4: Separating Mixtures in the Farm
There are processes done in farm that separates components of different
mixtures. These are: hand picking, winnowing and threshing.
.

1. HANDPICKING

7
Process:
The method in which substances in a mixture can be separated by just picking
them out with the help of hand from the mixture is known as handpicking method. It
is one of the various methods which are carried out in dry conditions.

Benefits:
Separating small quantities of substances will take only short period of time.
Also, the efficiency of using handpicking is higher than other techniques. Other
benefit is to prevent the pests’ build up and the resulting damage of the farm

2. WINNOWING

Process:
Winnowing is a farming method for separating grain from chaff. ... In its simplest
form it involves throwing the mixture into the air so that the wind blows away the
lighter chaff. The heavier grains fall back down for recovery.

Benefits:
Winnowing is very important in the farm. You get grains and husk separate by
winnowing, so husk can be used as food for animals. Also, you can separate grains
such as wheat, corn millet from lighter impurities like husk, straw and stones.

3. THRESHING

Process:
Threshing is the process of loosening the edible part of grain (or other crop)
from the chaff to which it is attached. It is the step-in grain preparation after reaping.

8
Benefits:
By the use of threshing, it is essential to separate the grain from the straw,
produces a clean grain and have a suitable feeding for animals

ACTIVITY CARD
Lesson 3
Objective 3 - Identify processes/activities done in the farm that separates
components of different mixtures.

FALSE if it is not.
1. You can use picking in separating mongo into rice grains.
2. sieving is used to separate rocks into different sized particles.
3. By the use of winnowing, farmers no need to buy machines to separate grain from
chaff.
4. There should be a less cost in production using the winnowing.
5. A sieve is used when the size of particle is too small to be picked by hand or when
the quantity is too large.
