Developing the Basic Fourfold from family A
For some time we mentioned the importance of proportion and
relation in patterns, and how important these two factors in developing
the patterns. In fact we hardly scratch the surface, and we only seen it
in very few simple patterns. In this tutorial and the next few ones, I will
illustrate the importance of these factors in more advanced level. First
we will develop the basic fourfold from “family A” into new patterns,
by adding few lines to the exact same basic structure. And when I say
few lines I mean few lines (not twenty or thirty additional lines). After
developing several patterns from this basic one, I will illustrate how to
develop more pattern combination from these patterns by stitching or
joining these patterns in different combinations. This will give a
practical insight of the importance of proportion and relation between
patterns.

Developing the Basic Fourfold from family A

Notes:‐
1. For these patterns you need to construct a square first, please go to the
link below to download the file on “How to construct a square”.

2. Please do not remove the construction lines when posting your drawing.

3. The Red              lines and circles indicate the present steps.

4. The Orange              lines and circles indicate the previous steps.

5. The Red dashed             lines and circles indicate extensions of lines and
Arcs.

6. The Red symbol           indicates the center location of Circles and Arcs.

 Radius of Circles and Arcs.

First draw a square, then draw two lines connecting the opposite corners of the
square.

3
Then draw an arc centered at point A with a radius equal to the side of the
square.

4
Then draw an arc centered at point A with a radius equal to A - B. And without
changing the compass draw another two arcs centered at C, D.

Draw five lines as illustrated.

11
Draw two lines as illustrated. At this stage the base structure of the pattern is
complete.

12
Up to this point we have the basic structure for the basic pattern from “Family A”. by
adding few construction lines, new patterns start to emerge.

13
Draw five lines as illustrated.

Without further additions to the base structure we can draw this pattern as well.

conclusions

By adding seven lines only to the basic

structure, six new patterns emerged from the
basic simple pattern. And all these new
patterns are from "Family A".
