DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS
(Finals)

1. The PLM Class tried out their invented hot air balloon at the field. As the balloon rises at the rate of 20
ft/min, Engr. Yap walked backwards from the launching point to get a better view of the rising balloon.

a. If Engr. Yap’s rate is 10 ft/min, how fast is his line of sight on the balloon changing after 1.5
minutes (Ans. 22.36 ft/min)

b. At a height of 50 ft, Engr. Contawi, who was riding on the balloon, accidentally dropped his
binoculars. How long will the binocular reach the ground? Will it break if the binocular was
designed to withstand an impact of 5 ft/sec? Justify your answer.

2. Given the following profit-versus-production function for a certain commodity:

1.1 8
P=200000−x−( )
1+ x
where P is the profit and x is unit of production

Determine the maximum profit. (Ans. 199,999.46)

3. A Norman window is in the shape of a rectangle surmounted by a semi-circle. What is the ratio of the
width of the rectangle to the total height so that it will yield a window admitting the most light for a
given perimeter? (Ans. 1)

4. A cylindrical steam boiler is to be constructed having a capacity of 1000 cubic meter. The material for
the sides cost P 2000.00 per square meter and for the ends P 3000.00 per square meter. Find the
radius so that the cost is least. (Ans. 4.73 m)

5. There is a constant inflow of a liquid into a conical vessel 15 feet deep and 7.5 feet in diameter at the
top. Water is rising at the rate of 2 feet per minute when the water is 4 feet deep. What is the rate of
inflow in cubic feet per minute? (Ans. 6.28 ft^3/min)

6. A load of 40 kN is to be raised by means of a lever weighing 250 N/m, which is supported at one end. If
the load is placed 1 m from the support, how long should the lever be so that the force required be
minimum. (Ans. 17.89m)

7. Find the slope of the line whose parametric equations are x=4 t+ 6 and y=t+1. (Ans. 1/4)
8. Find the equation of the normal and tangent to the curve x 2+ y 2−6 x−4 y−21=0 at (0,7). (Ans. TL 3x-
5y+35=0 and NL 5x+3y-21=0)

9. Find the acute angle between the curve 2 y 2=9 x and 3 x 2=−4 y . (Ans. -34.7 deg)

10. What is the radius of curvature at point (1, 2) of the curve 4 x− y 2=0 . (Ans. 5.66)

11. A particle moves along the path whose parametric equation are x=t 3 and y=12 t 2. Find the velocity
and acceleration when t= 2seconds. (Ans. 49.48 m/sec and 26.83m/sec/sec)

12. Find the total differential of w=z e(x+ y) at (0, 0, 1). (Ans. dw=dx+dy+dz)

y1 y2 y3
13. Let F=9 . Calculate partial of F with respect to y 3 at the point (1, -2, 4). (Ans. 2)
