What’s In

Consumer products are items or goods commonly bought for private

consumption. These products help us to accomplish our daily work from cleaning
the house, to washing our body, treating wounds, repairing broken objects, and
many more. However, we may not be familiar with the components of these
products. It is important to know what their components are, how to properly use
these products, and the risks thy may pose on us. It is possible that the products
that we use everyday can also be a risk to our health.

Now, answer the following questions below Write the correct answer on a
separate sheet of paper and submit a copy of it to your subject teacher.

1. Name the following consumer products given their main ingredients:

 Surfactants - _________________
 Acetic Acid - ________________
 Aluminum Compounds - __________________
 Fluoride - __________________
 Hydrochloric Acid - ____________________

2. Differentiate the four (4) types of consumer products, such as convenience,

shopping, specialty and unsought products.

Note the Teachers
The teacher must consider the prerequisite skills needed in
the development of this competency including the schema or
background knowledge which may reinforce learning. This module
will help the learners bridge the gap of learning to attain mastery
of the lesson in its spiral progression.

What is New

When a person smokes, a lot of harmful substances from the tobacco smoke
gets into his body as well as into those who breathed in the smoke. But do you
know the four harmful substances in cigarette smoke which are described in each
sentence below?

a. A very poisonous drug which causes people to become addicted to

smoking. It is even more poisonous than DDT, an insecticide. It can
damage the heart.

b. Small black particles which can deposit in the smoker’s lungs and cause
lung cancer.

c. A very poisonous gas which can lower the oxygen level in the heart. It can
cause damage to the brain and the heart.

d. Chemicals which irritate the lungs and air tubes which causes coughing.
They can also cause cancer.

7
What is It

Commonly Used Consumer Products

We use a lot of consumer products every day. Here are some examples.
Detergents. Detergents are water-soluble cleansing agents used in washing
clothes and other fabric. These products contain surfactants, the major component
of cleaning products that lower the surface tension of water. Surfactants also serve
as an emulsifier in removing dirt and oil on the surface of fabrics and even in our
skin. While generally helpful, detergents can also have harmful effects on
consumers. They can cause eye and skin irritations and can be toxic when inhaled
or swallowed.
Vinegar. Vinegar is a sour liquid condiment used for cooking. It has acetic
acid that gives it a sour taste. Acetic acid is also used to treat ear infections
because it has antifungal and antibacterial properties. It can also be used to
remove dirt and stains. Although vinegar has many uses, its acetic acid component
can also be harmful. Acetic acid is corrosive. It can damage metals. It can also
damage teeth.
Deodorant. Deodorant is used to prevent body odor. The sweet in our body
does not really have a smell. It becomes stinky when bacteria gather on the sweaty
part of the skin. Deodorant contains an aluminum compound that clogs the sweat
glands to temporarily stop the secretion of sweat. On the bad side, the aluminum
compound in deodorants can cause skin irritation and other allergic reactions.
Toothpaste. Toothpaste is a gel or a paste used to clean teeth and make
them stronger. We brush our teeth with toothpaste three times a day. This prevents
us from having bad breath and other mouth problems like tooth decay, plaque, and
gum diseases. Toothpaste has fluoride, a mineral that helps strengthen the teeth
and helps prevent tooth decay. Fluoride, however, when swallowed especially in
large amounts, can cause poisoning.
Toilet Bowl Cleaner. A toilet bowl cleaner is a substance used to clean,
disinfect, and deodorize toilets. Most of the time, soap and water are not enough to
clean a dirty bathroom, which is why a more effective and more concentrated
solution is needed for cleaning. The ingredient present in most toilet bowl cleaners
is hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid is a strong acid solution of hydrogen
chloride in water. It is used to remove stains from surfaces like bathroom and
kitchen tiles. However, hydrochloric acid can cause corrosion, skin and eye
irritation and can also be fatal when inhaled or ingested.

Four Types of Consumer Products:

8
Convenience •Inexpensive items
Goods •Takes little effort to shop for
•with no planning
•Unwilling to shop extensively for it
•Require wide distribution
•Impulse good
Shopping Goods •Require comparison shopping
•Purchased infrequently
•Consumers are willing to put the time and
effort into shopping
•Fairly expensive
•Available in a large number of select outlets
Specialty Goods •Consumers search extensively for a particular
item
•Unwilling to accept substitutes
•Unique characteristics
•Available only at select retailers
Unsought •Unknown to the consumer
Goods •Known product but not actively sought after
•Insurance, burial plots —require personal
selling and aggressive advertising
•New products—until consumer becomes aware
of them

What I Know:

1. Detergents
2. Vinegar
3. Deodorant
4. Toothpaste
5. Toilet Bowl Cleaner

What’s In:
1. Detergents
Vinegar
Deodorant
Toothpaste
Toilet Bowl Cleaner

2. Convenience Products are purchased frequently at a low price point.

Easily available and not commonly compared with other products.
Shopping Products are purchased less frequently at a medium price
point and commonly compared among other products. Specialty
Products are with unique characteristics or brand perception.
Purchased less frequently at a high price point. Seldom compared
between other products and only available at select/special places.
Unsought Products are not top-of-mind of consumers and requires
extensive advertising and marketing efforts.

What’s More:
1. Alcohol

2. Nicotine

3. Tar

14
What I have Learned:
1. Yes, because acidic rosin and alum binders were not used in papermaking until
the mid-1800s. (Books form the early 1800s can be found in pristine condition,
whereas books form the 1960s are today often too brittle to read.)
2. Electricity is energy that is readily transported through wires. In this sense, it
can be thought of as a carrier of energy. The energy of electricity is used to run a
light bulb, true, but the source of this energy is not the electricity. Rather, the
electricity is merely delivering the energy that was generated by some electric
generator, which received energy form nonelectrical source, such as a fossil fuel or
a waterfall.

What I Can Do:

1. Coal is the most abundant. Because it contains few impurities, natural gas
burns most cleanly. Because it is a liquid, petroleum is easiest to transport.
2. Naphthalene

3. For many years antibacterial soaps were assumed the “better” way to ward
harmful diseases and bacteria. However the triclosoan and triclorcarbon are
actually harmful. According to the FDA, it can be linked to creating antibiotic-
resistant bacteria and is not biodegradable.

Assessment:
1. c
2. b
3. a
4. c
5. a. true b. false c. true d. false
