1. TITLE
Incidence of injuries due to road traffic accidents at lady reading hospital, Peshawar KPK.

2. INTRODUCTION:
Road traffic injuries (RTIs) are recognized as a major public health problem all over the world, accounting
for morbidity and mortality following trauma(Sharma, 2008).Evidence suggests that the present and
projected global burden of road-traffic injuries is disproportionately borne by countries that can least afford
to meet the health service, economic, and societal challenges posed(Ameratunga et al., 2006). The incidence
of RTA and level of severity of casualties resulting from RTA directly affect the financial and human
resources of health service(Hamza et al., 2003). Major incidents have been defined as “events that owing to
the number and severity of live casualties require special arrangements” In 2002, an estimated 1·2 million
people were killed and 50 million injured in road traffic crashes worldwide, costing the global community
about US$518 billion. Without appropriate action, road-traffic injuries are predicted to escalate from the
ninth leading contributor to the global burden of disease in 1990 to the third by 2020(Ameratunga et al.,
2006). Pakistan is a developing country in South Asia with a struggling health-care infrastructure Like many
other third world countries, emergency medical services both pre-hospital and hospital have long been
neglected in Pakistan. Even in major incidents, no on-site help or support has been available, and patients
are often haphazardly collected and brought to the nearest Emergency Department(Waseem et al., 2011).
However, official reports indicated that only 7000 RTA fatalities occur each year in Pakistan. A 
recent report estimated 41000 RTA fatalities occur each year in Pakistan (Farooq et al., 2011). We need
to know more about the numbers and types of injuries and about the circumstances in which these injuries
occur. No study has been published recently in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa therefore the aim of our
study to find out incidence of injuries due to RTA in Peshawar , KPK.

3. OBJECTIVE(S):

To estimate the frequency of the road traffic accident injuries in Peshawar LRH , KPK.
To describe the patterns of injury in road traffic accident (RTA) in Peshawar LRH , KPK
To find the outcome of road traffic accident (RTA) patients arrived to the Accident & Emergency
department of LRH.

7. SAMPLE SELECTION:
7a. Inclusion Criteria:
All the patients with injury due to road traffic accident presented to Emergency department LRH
Peshawar.

7b. Exclusion Criteria:


Expired patients.
Unwilling patients.

8. DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE:

We will consent from every patient.


A data will be collected with a semi structured pre-tested questionnaire.

9. DATA ANALYSIS PROCEDURE:

We will use SPSS version 23 for analysis of data. We will find out percentage of the categorical variables
will computed and compared by Chi square test at a 5% level of significance.
