1 Scope
1.1 This standard covers the testing and certification of welders who carry out certified welding of
thermoplastics in new constructions, modifications and repairs.
1.2 This standard applies to the hot-gas, hot-gas extrusion, heated-tool, electrofusion and solvent
welding processes.
1.3 The implementation of this standard ensures that the testing of welders will be carried out under
uniform conditions and that the competence of a certified welder is such that it will comply with the
minimum acceptable requirements.

6.2 When the range of qualifications which are to be approved by testing is considered, satisfactory
tests on subgroups 4 and 5 will also render approval for welding of subgroups 6 and 7, but not vice
versa.
6.3 During the test, the candidate welder shall demonstrate his practical skills in accordance with
the requirements of 6.2 and his theoretical knowledge in accordance with the requirements of 6.5.
6.4 In the practical test, the candidate welder shall weld those test pieces of material type and
welding process which relate to the products to be ultimately welded in production. If more than one
process is included in a subgroup as shown in table 1, the candidate welder shall be tested on each
process in the subgroup; otherwise he is only qualified for the specific processes on which he was
tested.
6.5 The theoretical part of the test shall require the candidate welder to demonstrate knowledge of
the following:
a) the designations and compatibility of the plastics and fillers or solvents related to the subgroup(s)
being tested;
b) the meanings of the standardized welding signs and symbols applicable to the subgroup(s) being
tested (see SANS 2553); Amdt 2
c) the operation of the welding equipment and the relationship between temperature, pressure and
time in the usage of the equipment;
e) the types of welding process on which the candidate welder is being tested;
f) the preparation of workpieces for welding (see SANS 10268-1, SANS 10268-2, SANS 10268-3,
SANS 10268-4 and SANS 10268-5);
NOTE The written test shall be conducted in the language preferred by the candidate welder or, if necessary,
the test may be conducted orally, with the help of a qualified interpreter.
7.2 Test pieces shall be selected according to the final product that the candidate welder will be
expected to weld in practice, in respect of base material, filler material or solvent, workpiece
thickness or diameter, and welding process, in accordance with table 1.
7.3 In cases where specific end requirements are not known or where the work that requires
welding is of a diverse nature, it is recommended that test pieces that demand the highest degree of
skill be selected for the welding tests.
7.4 Test pieces on which welding has been started may be replaced, after consultation with the
inspector, should difficulties arise which are not adjudged to be the fault of the candidate welder.

8.3 The number, shape and thickness of the test specimens to be cut from the test piece(s) shall
be as specified in SANS 6269 for the relevant subgroup.
8.4 Besides the initial number of test specimens required by SANS 6269, a further five test
specimens shall be prepared from the test piece, in order to accommodate any mechanical re-tests
that might be required (see 10.3).
8.5 Preparation of test specimens shall be carried out without damage to the welds or to their
transition zones.
9.2 The requirements for the visual evaluation of the test pieces are given in table 2 for the manual
welding processes WE, WF and WZ, and in tables 3, 4, 5 and 6 for the welding processes HS, HD,
HM and SW respectively.
9.3 The mechanical properties of the test piece(s) shall be determined in accordance with
procedures described in SANS 6269.
9.3.1 The tests selected from SANS 6269 shall be relevant to the final application of the test piece.
9.3.2 The numerical averages of the required five tensile and five bending (if appropriate) test
results, shall in each case be recorded on the relevant evaluation record form (see annexes B to F).
9.4 All assessments, evaluations, measured values and findings shall be entered on the relevant
evaluation record form (see annexes B to F).
9.5 The assessment criteria shall be in accordance with the data given in tables 2 to 6 and in
SANS 6269.
10.2 Should this substitute test piece fail to comply with the relevant requirements, the test shall be
discontinued and the candidate shall be recommended for further training.
10.3 Should one of the test specimens used for the tensile or the bending tests fail to comply with
the relevant requirements, a further specimen of the same type and from the same test piece may be
tested. (See also 8.2.)
10.4 Should this specimen fail to comply with the mechanical test requirements, the entire test shall
be considered to be unsatisfactory and the candidate shall be recommended for further training.

11 Test results
11.1 Practical test
The candidate welder shall be considered to have satisfied the requirements of the practical test if all
visual examinations satisfy the criteria specified in 9.2, and if all mechanical tests satisfy the criteria
set out in SANS 6269.
13 Test certificate
If all parts of the test are completed successfully, this shall be recorded on the candidate's test
certificate which shall be presented to him with a copy of the evaluation record form.
14.2 The period between annual repeat tests may be increased at the discretion of the
SAQCC-NPE if the welder has been employed on production work which is within the same test
subgroup(s) as the original test and the work is supervised regularly by a plastics welding inspector,
who has been approved for this purpose by the SAQCC-NPE. During this period, there shall be
random sampling from the most difficult positions of the welder's work and destructive testing of the
welder's work. If supervision is only by visual inspection, then the annual repeat test shall be
undertaken when due.
14.3 Results of this supervision shall be recorded and shall be submitted on request to the
contractor or to other persons with the authorization of the SAQCC-NPE.
14.4 A repeat test shall be required if, for a period of more than six months, a welder has not been
working with the materials or processes of the subgroup(s) for which he was originally certified.
14.5 In the case of a welder who works solely on one test subgroup, the repeat test need only be
related to that group.
14.6 In the theoretical part of a repeat test, knowledge regarding the prevention of accidents and
new technical developments shall be demonstrated.
