Zero-Sequence Impedance of Cables

Description: How is the zero-sequence impedance of cables calculated

Category: Cable
Type: Calculation
Keywords: Cable, Zero-sequence Impedance

Question:
How is the zero-sequence impedance of cables calculated?

Answer:
Zero-sequence impedance of cables are determined by factors such as cable type (armor,
ground conductor shielding), installation type (magnetic or non-magnetic conduit/raceway), and
soil resistivity. The return path of zero-sequence current is the minimum resistance path. Based
on these factors and industries recommended zero-sequence resistance and inductive
reactance factors we have used the following multiplication factors in our calculations.

• For cables in magnetic ducts, multiplication factors for zero sequence resistance and
inductive reactance are 3.15 and 2.46 respectively.

• For cables in non-magnetic ducts, multiplication factors for zero sequence resistance
and inductive reactance are 1.59 and 2.54 respectively.

Attached also please find “Zero-Sequence Resistance and Reactance” calculation methods as
recommended by Transmission and Distribution reference book, published by Westinghouse
Electric Corporation, 1964.
