Motor Starting Calculations Using Motor Characteristics Model

Description: Motor Starting Torque utilization in motor starting
Category: Motor Starting, Acceleration Torque
Type: Informative
Keywords: Motor Starting, Motor Characteristic Model

• In Motor Starting calculations, a motor can be represented by a characteristics model,

which includes motor torque, power factor, and current as functions of motor slip.

• With the characteristics model and motor load model, ETAP can simulate the motor
starting process.

• It should be noted that both the motor torque and load torque curves entered in the
library are based on motor rated output torque.

• In the simulation calculations, these torques need to be converted to a new base that is
dependent on motor efficiency and rated power factor.

• The motor acceleration torque reported in the plot and text report is based on this new
base.

• Therefore, the acceleration torque reported by ETAP may not be equal to the difference
between the motor torque and the load torque entered in the library.
