ASSESSMENT 3A

1.Define acceleration
Acceleration means increase in velocity and it is a measure of the rate at which the
velocity increases – it is the amount of change in velocity divided by the time interval over
which the change occurs.

∆v

∆t

2. What do we mean when we say that gravity is a non‐contact force?

It means that we do not have to be in contact (touching) with the earth for the force to
act on us.

3. What is the difference between mass and weight?

Weight and mass are not the same, weight is a force and mass is a measure of how much
matter is in the object.

4. What conclusions did Galileo reach concerning free fall?

Galileo concluded that all objects, regardless of their mass, and in the absence of air
resistance, fall to earth with the same acceleration g = 10 m/s 2.

5. What is the weight of an object of mass 150 kg on earth?

w=mg=( 150 kg ) ( 10 m/s2 ) =1500 kg m/s 2=1500 N

6. What is the mass of an object that weighs 2000 N on earth?

w 2000 N 2000 kg m/s2

m= = = =200 kg
g 10 m/ s 2 10 m/s 2

7. An object is dropped from rest from the top of a tall building. Make a table showing the
velocity of the object for each second that it falls up to 10 seconds.

TIME VELOCITY
0s 0 m/s
1s 10 m/s
2s 20 m/ s
3s 30 m/s
4s 40 m/ s
5s 50 m/s
6s 60 m/s
7s 70 m/s
8s 80 m/s
9s 90 m/s
10 s 100 m/ s
