ELECTRICAL POWER UP
The following procedure is accomplished to permit safe application of electrical power.
In doing all this we are making sure the electrical system is setup properly and nothing is set to move before we
apply APU power or GPU power.

(EICAS) are not in agreement, DO NOT
apply electrical power until both the
leading and trailing flap area is cleared.
Application of power will cause immediate
movement of the flaps electrically and
could cause injury to personnel who might
be in the area of the flaps.

50 FEET ABOVE RUNWAY ELEVATION

● Armed LNAV engages

If the route is going to require ATC vector procedures or flight to a certain intercept before being turned over to
LNAV, use the MCP commanded heading bug until the LNAV mode can be engaged.

400 FEET ABOVE RUNWAY ELEVATION

● Armed VNAV engages (Airspeed on elevator)
● A/T changes to THR REF mode (Throttles at climb limit)
Under normal circumstances VNAV will be armed prior to commencing the takeoff roll.
An alternate method is to allow the TO/GA mode to manage the vertical profile up to the flap retraction height
before selecting either the VNAV or FLCH modes to manage the vertical profile.
Both of these modes will use FMC TAKEOFF REF page data to provide optimal aircraft performance, and both
modes provide for speed limit protection to prevent overspeed during the flap retraction sequence.

During high workload times, for example departure or arrival, try to reduce the need for CDU entries.
Do this by using the MCP heading, altitude, and speed control modes.
The MCP can be easier to use than entering complex route modifications into the CDU.

31
AT FLAP ACCELERATION HEIGHT (DEFAULT : 1 000 FT)

VNAV starts using a target speed of 30REF+100 :

● but not less than 250 kt ;
● and not greater than flap limit speed or airport speed restriction SPD RESTR (usually 250
kt while below 10 000 feet MSL), whichever is lower
VNAV engaged
(*) At acceleration height, pitch commands speed to 5 knots below takeoff flap placard speed.
As flaps are retracted, pitch commands an acceleration to 5 knots below the placard speed
of the commanded flap position.
When flaps are up, pitch commands an acceleration to VNAV climb speed.
● select FLCH
● and set the MCP speed bug to 30REF+100 (*) or 250 KIAS (whichever is greater) to initiate
VNAV not used the acceleration process
(*) The simplest way to determine 30REF+100 is to add 20 kt to the Flaps Up speed bug on the
PFD airspeed indicator.
Climb Target Speed 30REF+100 :
- provides the best climb gradient for a given weight and thrust performance
- in level flight, provides minimum drag and best fuel economy for a non-cruise flight environment
- will typically exceed 250 knots for aircraft gross weights in excess of 285 T

The maneuvering speed flap schedule is displayed on the airspeed

indicator and functions as follows :
Climb Target Speed 30 REF + 100 (= flaps up speed bug + 20)
FLAPS 0 30 REF + 80
FLAPS 1 30 REF + 60
FLAPS 5 30 REF + 40
FLAPS 10 30 REF + 20
FLAPS : FLAPS 20 30 REF + 10
RETRACT ON SCHEDULE FLAPS 25 25 REF
FLAPS 30 30 REF

Retract flaps according to the flap retraction schedule on the airspeed indicator.
During the flap retraction sequence, do not select the next flap setting until the aircraft
has accelerated beyond the amber warning band (on the airspeed indicator) for the next
flap setting.
For example, if you want FLAPS 5, DO NOT select FLAPS 5 until the speed bug is at or
above the FLAPS 5 indicator (takeoff FLAPS 10 : at speedtape display “5”, select FLAPS 5)

During climb

Stabilizer tank pumps must remain OFF

38
In cruise, FSMCs will activate the stabilizer tank pumps when the associated switches are set to ON and the center
tank has decreased to 36 500 kg :

When FUEL PMP STB L or R message is shown and tank quantity > 1 600 kg,
set both L and R Stabilizer tank pumps switches ON

When the stabilizer tanks are empty, EICAS message FUEL LO STAB appears :

When FUEL LO STAB L message is shown and tank quantity < 1200 kg,
set left stabilizer tank pump switch OFF

**********************************************************************
When FUEL LO STAB R message is shown and tank quantity < 600 kg,
set right stabilizer tank pump switch OFF

39
FUEL LOW CTR message → set Center Pumps switches OFF
During step climb tank quantity ≈ 3 200 kg
(pitch ≥ 5°)
FUEL LO STAB message → set stabilizer tank pump switch OFF

FUEL OVD CTR message → set Center Pumps switches back ON

After levelling off tank quantity ≥ 1 800 kg
(pitch < 5°)
FUEL PMP STB message → set Stabilizer tank pumps switches back ON
tank quantity > 1 600 kg

When the center tank is empty.

When center tank pumps shut down (when low pressure is detected from either CWT pump with CWT pump
switches ON or when CWT pump switches are pushed OFF), FSMCs activate O/J pumps in main tanks 2 and 3, so
that main tank 2 supplies the left wing engines, and main tank 3 supplies the right wing engines.

When FUEL LOW CTR R or L message is shown and :

tank quantity ≈ 1 300 kg in cruise (pitch < 5°)
or tank quantity ≈ 3 200 kg in climb (pitch ≥ 5°)
→ set both L and R Center Pumps switches OFF

When FUEL OVD CTR L or R message is shown

and tank quantity ≥ 1 800 kg in cruise (pitch < 5°)
→ set both Center L and R Pumps switches ON

40
During the next phase of flight, the reserve tanks are emptied
(when Main tank 2 or 3 quantity decreased to 18 100 kg, FSMCs activate
transfer from reserve tanks 2 & 3 to associated main tanks, and start
center tank scavenging).

Inboard main tank quantities depleted to the point where they are equal
to or less than outboard main tank quantities
(EICAS message FUEL TANK/ENG).

When FUEL TANK/ENG message is shown

and tank 2 quantity ≤ tank 1 or tank 3 quantity ≤ tank 4 :
● set main tank O/J pump switches to OFF
● set valve switches 1 and 4 to OFF

41
DESCENT PROCEDURE
Start the Descent Procedure before the airplane descends below the cruise altitude for arrival at destination.
Complete the descent Procedure by 10 000 feet MSL.

● For altitude changes, VNAV is generally considered to be the preferred method, as the VNAV program provides
speed management not found in the V/S mode, and as such can make for a smoother approach with less
significant throttle movement and thrust changes.
● When VNAV mode is not usable, or at the crews discretion, FLCH will provide for speed management during a
descent, but will result in increased throttle movement and cabin noise during small altitude changes.
● For small altitude changes, use of the V/S mode will minimize A/T thrust changes until the new, lower altitude is
reached.

Passenger comfort is maximized and engine wear and tear are minimized when changes in required thrust settings
are anticipated and accounted for by the crew.
For example, when the landing gear are lowered, timely selection of the next slower speed required for the
approach will eliminate the need for the A/T to increase thrust in order to compensate for increased drag from the
landing gear immediately prior to a thrust change for a decrease in approach speed.

Engine anti-ice :
● must be activated prior to, and operated during a descent in icing conditions
● should be activated even if the temperature falls below -40°C SAT during the descent
