Relationship and Effects of Social Media Usage of Bachelor of Science

in Accountancy Students of University of the East Manila to Their


Academic Performance
Abstract

Social media has become a prevalent method for communicating and socializing used not only by

teenagers but also by elders and younger generations for business, academic and professional purposes

or even for entertainment. However, the usage of these social media sites or applications may have affect

ones concentration and well-being.

Considering the above facts, this research aims to identify the relationship of social media usage

and academic performance of student users and how the said activity affects ones academic performance.

The researchers will utilize simple random sampling technique and questionnaire method in gathering data

necessary for the study. The researchers will limit the scope of their study to the students of Bachelor of

Science in Accountancy of the University of the East, Manila as their respondents.

In order to quantify and determine the relationship between academic performance and social

media usage of the respondents, the researchers will gather the most recent general weighted average

(GWA) of the respondents and ask their average hours spent using social media. The respondents will also

be asked set of questions concerning how social media affect their academic performance both positively

and negatively to supply the qualitative part of the study. The researchers will use thematic analysis in

order to identify the common themes and come up to a set of advantages and disadvantages of social

media usage affecting the academic performance of the respondents.
