INTRODUCTION

Air quality refers to the condition of the air surrounding us. Good air quality pertains to the

level of which the air is clean, clear and free from various pollutants such as smoke, dust

particles, smog and other gaseous impurities mixed in the air. Good air quality is a necessity

in preserving the exquisite balance of life on earth for all living things including humans,

plants, animals and the world’s natural resources. With this, these living things are greatly

affected if the air pollution would reach high concentrations that would threaten their very

existence.

The air quality in the Philippines is dirty but improving in terms of the total particulate

suspended which has an annual value of 90 g/Ncm.

Air quality can be improved based on the statistical data that can be found in an emission

inventory. Emission inventories are being conducted by annually by the government. This

emission inventory serves as a tool to provide prevention and mitigation of air pollution in a

certain area.

BARANGAY PROFILE

Magugpo Poblacion is a barangay in the city of Tagum, in the province of Davao del Norte.

Its population as determined by the 2015 Census was 3,165. This represented 1.22% of the

total population of Tagum.According to the 2015 Census, the age group with the highest

population in MagugpoPoblacion is 20 to 24, with 371 individuals. Conversely, the age group

with the lowest population is 80 and over, with 37 individuals.

The population of MagugpoPoblacion fell from 60,865 in 1990 to 3,165 in 2015, a decrease

of 57,700 people. The latest census figures in 2015 denote a negative growth rate of 7.70%,

or a decrease of 1,655 people, from the previous population of 4,820 in 2010.

Magugpo Poblacion is situated at approximately 7.4462, 125.8115, in the island of

Mindanao. Elevation at these coordinates is estimated at 23.1 meters or 75.8 feet above mean

sea level.

According to the latest census, with a population of 3, 165, the household size is 4.59

resulting in an approximate number of households to 690.

EMISSION SOURCES

POINT SOURCE

A point source of pollution is a single identifiable source of air, water, thermal, noise or light

pollution. According to US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a point source is a

source of pollutants coming from pipe, ditch, ship or factory smokestrack.

There are three identified point source near the households sampled:

D’ Veranda’s: An Events Place – function hall with catering services

Letran de Davao – school for primary and secondary education

Ningnang’s Catering Services – function hall with catering services

MOBILE SOURCE

Mobile source air pollution includes air pollution emitted by motor vehicles, airplanes,

locomotives and other engines and equipment that can be moved from one location to

another. Many of these mobile sources contribute to the degradation of air quality around the

world.

Mobile source emissions include greenhouse gases, nitrogen oxides (NOx) which contributes

to the climate change and triggers asthma attacks, damages in the lung tissues and forests.

Fine particulate matter (PM) is also emitted which causes cardiovascular and respiratory

damage that leads to haze causes visibility impairment. The diseases offered by the air

pollution caused by this source are often found on children such as sinusitis, bronchitis,

asthma and allergies.

As seen on the map of the Barangay Magugpo Poblacion, it is situated near the National

Highway where the skyway is being constructed and the public road connected to the

National Highway can also be found near the sampled households.

WHAT IS AN EMISSION INVENTORY?

An emission inventory is a database that lists, by source, the amount of air pollutants

discharged into the atmosphere during a year or other time period. Governments around the

world use emission inventories to determine significant sources of air pollutants and to target

regulatory actions. Emission inventories are used in determining the air quality of a certain

area. Inventories can also be used to raise awareness to the public regarding the source of air

pollution.

Emission inventory includes estimates of the emissions from various sources in an area.

Emission factors are representative values that attempt to relate the quantity of a pollutant

emitted with an activity level associated with the emission of that pollutant. Emission factors

are often expressed in g/kg. Emission factors are established with the support of various

studies in getting the average emissions (acceptable quality) and are known to represent long

– term averages.
EMISSION INVENTORY IN BRGY MAGUGPO POBLACION

Out of 690, there were 20 households interviewed with what they use as a means for cooking.

Population (2015): 3, 165

Household Size: 4.59
No of Household: 690
Sample Size: 20
% of Sample Size: 3%

There are 4 types of materials used in cooking in the 20 households interviewed. Firewood,

butane, LPG and charcoal (coconut shell) were used. Every household has different level of

consumption. Some households use two or more materials in cooking as there will be times

that one of them will ran out of one of the materials; the other serves as an alternative means.

The data that will be shown below are both of the sample size and as a whole.
EMISSION INVENTORY (SAMPLE SIZE)

Every material used in cooking emits different type of gaseous compounds every time they

are used in cooking. The emitted gases are shown below with their corresponding amount in

g/kg.

FIREWOOD:

The emission inventory for the 20 households annually is as follows:

Total
Emissions PM2.5 PM10 CO NOX SOX NMVOC CO2 N2O CH4 NH3
(kg)
Firewood 1.32 1.66 12.14 0.07 0.13 3.18 680.60 0.01 3.78 0.16

Total 3.15 3.55 70.96 11.46 0.40 6.30 12271.97 0.54 8.21 0.59

Among the gases emitted by different materials used, carbon dioxide has the highest amount

of emission with a total of 12, 271.97 kg.

As a rule of thumb, to compute the total emission of the total households, we will have to

divide the emission values by the percentage of the sample size which is 3%.

The total annual emission for the 690 households in Barangay Magugpo Poblacion is as

follows:

Total
Emissions PM2.5 PM10 CO NOX SOX NMVOC CO2 N2O CH4 NH3
(kg)
Firewood 44.16 55.20 404.77 2.41 4.25 106.15 22686.72 0.45 125.96 5.24

Annually, the Barangay Magugpo Poblacion emits 365, 237.46 kg of carbon dioxide. Setting

aside the facts that the Barangay is near the downtown area and is surrounded with shopping

center.
