IMPLEMENTATION OF GREEN BUILDING AND GREEN ARCHITECTURE AS AN

EFFORT TO ACHIEVE SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE

Environmental issues, especially global warming, have been a sticking point lately. In the
world of architecture comes the phenomenon of sick building syndrome, namely health
problems and discomfort due to air quality and air pollution in occupied buildings that affect
the productivity of residents, the absence of poor air ventilation, and less natural lighting.
This is due to several things, for example: ozone emissions of copy machines, pollution from
furniture and wood paneling, cigarette smoke, etc. (Human and Environmental)
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 30% of the world's buildings are
experiencing indoor air quality problems. Therefore, there is a concept of green architecture
that is an architectural planning approach that seeks to minimize various harmful influences
on human health and the environment. The concept of green architecture has several benefits
including more durable buildings, energy saving, minimal building maintenance, more
comfortable to live in, and healthier for residents. The concept of green architecture
contributes to environmental issues, especially global warming. Moreover, buildings are the
largest producer of more than 30% of global carbon dioxide emissions as one of the causes of
global warming. (World Health Organisation).
In addition to global warming, the creation or innovation of renewable energy is also the
background to the rise of the concept of green architecture. Until finally came the concept of
Green Building. Energy Efficient Building or known as green building continues to be
encouraged as one of the anticipatory measures against global climate change. With the right
energy saving concept, the energy consumption of a building can be lowered by up to 50%,
by only increasing investment by 5% during construction. "By only adding 5% of the cost of
building a regular building, the energy consumption of the building can be lowered to 50%."
Green Building is built with modern energy planning. In addition to the design that is
considered to minimize the influx of sunlight so as to reduce the use of Air Conditioner (AC)
load, on the roof of the building can be installed solar panels that can be utilized as a source
of energy in the building. Some points of view can be considered in the planning including
passive design, active design, air condition, management, and service & maintenance.

1.2 Green Building
Green Building refers to structures and uses environmentally responsible
processes and efficient resources throughout the life cycle of the building: from
tread determination to design, construction, operation, maintenance, demolition
renovation, and. This practice expands and complements the classic building
design of economic concerns, utility durability,, andcomfort.( Environmental
Ecology and Development).
Green building is a concept for 'sustainable building' and has certain conditions,
namely location, planning and design system, renovation and operation, which
adheres to the principle of saving enrgi and should have a positive impact on the
environment, economy and social. (Environmental Ecology and Development).
Although new technologies are constantly being developed to complement the
current practice of creating green structures, the general goal is that green
buildings are designed to reduce the overall environmental impact of
development on human health and the natural environment by:
1. Efficient use of energy, water, and other resources. Designed at less cost to
operate and has excellent energy performance.
2. Protect the health of residents and increase employee productivity
3. Reduce waste, pollution and environmental degradation
4. Natural buildings, which are usually on a smaller scale and tend to focus on the
use of natural materials available locally.
5. Green buildings do not specifically address existing home building problems.
6. Reducing environmental impact: Green building practice aims to reduce the
environmental impact of buildings.
(Environmental Ecology and Development).
1.3 Green Architecture
The concept of 'Green Architecture' or green architecture is an interesting topic today,
partly because of the need to empower potential sites and save natural resources due
to the depletion of un renewable energy sources. Various architects' thoughts and
interpretations arise differently, each resulting from the association with the
professional conditions they face. (City Development and Spatial Environment).
Green Architecture is an architectural concept that seeks to minimize adverse effects
on the natural and human environment and produce a better and healthier place to
live, which is done by utilizing energy sources and natural resources efficiently and
optimally. (City Development and Spatial Environment).
'Green' can be interpreted as sustainable, earthfriendly, and high performance
building. The size of 'green' is determined by a variety of factors, where there is a
ranking that refers to awareness to become greener. In developed countries there are
awards, tax deductions, incentives given to buildings that are classified as 'green'.
(City Development and Spatial Environment).
Architectural indications referred to as 'green' when associated with architectural
practices include the use of renewable resources (renewable sources, passive-active
solar photovoltaic (solar cell power plants), techniques of using plants for roofs, rain
gardens, using compacted gravel for hardening areas, and so on. (City Development
and Spatial Environment).
The concept of 'green' can also be applied to the reduction of energy usage (e.g.
electric energy), low energy house and zero energy building by maximizing building
envelope. The use of renewable energy such as solar, water, biomass, and sewage
treatment into energy is also worth taking into account. From the above
understanding, Green Architecture is very important to human life, both in the past,
now especially will come. Here's the implementation of green architecture:
1. Has High Perfomance Building & Earth Friendly Concept.
a. Can be seen from the walls of the building, there is glass in some parts. The
function is to save the use of electricity for buildings especially in terms of
lighting from lights.
b. Use natural energy such as wind, as an environmental conditioner.
c. The building materials used tend to be environmentally friendly such as
ceramics with rough motifs on the floor to reduce heat reflections resulting
from glazed walls.
d. The water pool around the building works in addition to being able to reflect
the light rays, it can also reduce the heat of the sun so that the air appears
cool and humid.
2. Have a Sustainable Concept
The development is very conceptual, studying the environmental land of the
region is very limited, with natural and natural concepts, combined with the
concept of high technology, this building allows it to continue to survive in the
long term because it does not damage the existing environment.
3. Have Future Healthly Concept.
a. Can be seen from some shady plants surrounding the building, making the
air climate cool and healthy for the surrounding life, the environment
appears calm, as some vegetation can be used as a noise retainer.
b. The walls of the building curtain wall coated in aluminum can be useful for
UV protector for the building itself. Surely this can all have a positive
effect on life.
c. On the roof of the building, there is a ladder for the users who will go
upstairs. This can minimize the use of electricity for elevators or
escalators.
d. Certainly health more healthy, in addition to the cool on the roof of the
building there is grass used as a green roof, users also get sunlight.
4. Has Climate Supportly Concept.
With the concept of greening, it is suitable for climates that are still classified
as tropical (equator). In the rain, it can be as a water bath, and in times of
drought, it can be as air conditioning.
5. Has Esthetic Usefully Concept.
The use of green roof on this campus, in addition to beauty and to look fused
with nature, can also be used as a water catcher as a natural air conditioning
process because sunlight is not absorbed concrete directly. It also lowers the
hot temperatures during the day and cools at night for the surrounding
environment. Its curved design is used so that the absorption of the sun by the
skin of the building can be minimalisized.
(City Development and Spatial Environment).

1.4 Sustainable Architecture
Sustainable Architecture, is an interesting topic. Lately more and more news and
promoted among architects, because architects have an important role in the
management of natural resources in the design of buildings. Great appreciation for
those who contribute to promoting sustainable architecture so that we are wiser in
using depleting natural resources. (Sustainable Development Planning).
Sustainable Architecture or in Indonesian is Sustainable Architecture, is an applied
concept in the field of architecture to support sustainable concepts, namely the
concept of maintaining natural resources to last longer, which is associated with the
age of vital potential of natural resources and human ecological environment, such as
planetary climate systems, agricultural systems, industry, forestry, and of course
architecture. Natural damage caused by the exploitation of natural resources has
reached the level of destruction globally, so slowly but surely, the earth will further
lose its potential to support human life, as a result of various exploitations of that
nature. (Sustainable Development Planning).
Sustainability can be defined as meeting the needs of current generations without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs New ways can be
thought of based on constructive experience, from vernacular and modern
architecture. (Sustainable Development Planning).

A. Implementation of Sustainable Architecture
The negative impact of construction development varies greatly, among others, is
the excessive exploitation of natural resources. Just look, natural resource mining
is dredged up, deforestation without replanting, where these kinds of things can
degrade the quality of other natural resources on earth. Not only that, technology
and technology used by humans such as vehicles, production tools in the
production system of goods and services (e.g. factories), household appliances and
so on can have a negative impact due to exhaust emissions, waste that pollutes the
environment. (Sustainable City).
The need for more promotion for sustainable architecture is a must, given the
earth's declining condition due to the degradation of the quality of the Earth's
atmosphere that impacts global warming. The more architects and architectural
consultants use sustainable design principles, the more buildings are
environmentally responsive and minimize the environmental impact of
development. The push to use more sustainable architectural principles, among
others, encourages other parties to deal with development such as developers,
governments and others. They also need to be encouraged to pay more attention to
sustainability in this development by not only exploiting the land to make as much
profit as possible without contributing to the environment or paying attention to
the environmental impacts that can occur. (Sustainable City).
Apparently, it is not easy to eliminate at all the impact of development and
construction on the environment. Surely it is impossible to ban people from
building, because it is already a human need, so all it can do is include sustainable
architectural concepts in order to minimize the negative impact of construction on
the environment. This sustainable architecture concept has many similarities,
namely calling for natural resources and land potential not to be used
indiscriminately, the use of land potential for energy-efficient architecture, and so
on. (Sustainable City).
Various concepts in architecture that support sustainable architecture, among
others:
1. In Energy Use Efficiency
Architecture can be the most influential medium with the implementation of
sustainable architecture, because of its impact directly on the land. Design
concepts that can minimize the use of electric energy, for example, can be
classified as a sustainable concept in energy, which can be integrated with the
concept of using the sun source to the maximum for lighting, natural air
conditioning, water heating for domestic needs, and so on.
a. Utilize sunlight for maximum natural lighting during the day, to reduce the
use of electrical energy.
b. Utilizing natural air conditioning in exchange for artificial air conditioner. Uses
ventilation and openings, cross-air conditioning, and other innovative
ways.
c. Utilizing rainwater in innovative ways to accommodate and process
rainwater for domestic purposes.
d. The concept of energy efficiency such as lighting and natural air
conditioning is a specific concept for regions with tropical climates.
2. In Land Use Efficiency
Increasingly narrow, expensive and valuable land should not be used entirely
for buildings, because there should always be green land and support the
sustainability of land potential.
a. Using as necessary existing land, not all land should be used as buildings, or
covered with buildings, because thus the existing land does not have
enough green land and parks. Use land efficiently, compactly and
integratedly.
b. The green potential of plants in the land can be replaced or maximized with
various innovations, such as the creation of roofs on buildings (roof gardens),
hanging gardens (by hanging potpot plants around buildings), fencing
plants or that can be filled with plants, walls with gardens on walls (such
as those designed by Adi Purnomo in some houses), and so on.
c. Appreciating the presence of plants on the land, by not easily cutting down the
trees, so that existing plants can be a part to share with the building d. Open
design with open spaces to the garden (according to the flexibility of pre-
planned openings) can be an innovation to integrate the outside and inside
of the building, providing greater space flexibility.
d. In design planning, consider things that can be a benchmark for using a
variety of land potentials, for example; how much area and much space is
needed? Where is the land (in the city or village) and what are the
consequences for the design? How does the site shape and its effect on
space design? How much potential can natural light and air conditioning
be used?
3. In Material Use Efficiency
a. Utilizing residual materials for use also in development, so as not to dispose
of materials, for example wood residual formwork can be used for other
parts of the building.
b. Utilizing used materials for buildings, old components that can still be used,
for example the remaining demolition of old buildings.
c. Using materials that are still abundant and that are rarely encountered to the
best, especially for increasingly rare materials such as wood.
d. In the use of new technologies and materials.
e. Utilize the potential of renewable energy such as wind, sunlight and water to
generate domestic electricity for households and other buildings
independently.
f. Utilizing new materials through new discoveries that globally can open up
opportunities using renewable materials that are quickly produced, cheap
and open to innovation, such as bamboo.
4. In Waste Management
a. Make domestic sewage treatment systems such as black water (grey water)
that are independent and do not burden the city's water flow system.
b. Innovative ways to try such as making organic waste decomposition systems to
decompose naturally in land [home book refs], making ordinary objects
into waste or domestic waste from materials that can be recycled or can be
easily decomposed naturally.

(Sustainable City).
