CVE20003

DESIGN OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES

Reinforced Concrete Project:

Milestone 3: Beam Analysis
Wong Kien Kuok
CONTENTS
• Milestone 3
• Location of column and
beam to be designed
• Loads transferred to beam
• Brickwall
• Combination of all loads
transferred to beam
CVE20003_16S2_W06P1.M03 2
MILESTONE 3
1. Determine the location of column and beam
to be designed.
2. Idealize all the possible loadings (from slab &
brickwall) for the continuous beam to be
designed.
3. Consider (a) all supports as pinned supports,
(b) only the ultimate load case for this
exercise
4. Analyze the beam by using moment
distribution method. Construct corresponding
SFD, BMD and deflected shape.

CVE20003_16S2_W06P1.M03 3
COLUMN & BEAMS TO BE
DESIGNED
• Choose a column to be designed (a)
extended from footing to roof, (b)
intersect by 2 continuous beams
• Every member is required to design one
of the continuous beams that intersect
at the chosen column, from ground, first
or roof floor

CVE20003_16S2_W06P1.M03 5
LOADS TRANSFERRED TO BEAM
• The possible loads to be transferred to beam
are from slab/roof, brickwall, stiffener,
secondary beam and selfweight of the
beam
• Idealize all the loads transferred to the beam.
• For the purpose of beam design, the loads
transferred from slab may be assumed to be
uniformly distributed over the full span
(Warner et al. 1998, p. 560)
• The load can be simplified as UDL, w = total
load / length of beam

CVE20003_16S2_W06P1.M03 8
BRICKWALL LOAD
• Height of brick wall for ground floor = height of
ground floor – first floor beam depth (to be assumed
400 – 600mm, say 400mm)

Depth of Upper
floor beam

Floor Height Height of

Brickwall
Beam to be
analysed

• Therefore brick wall height = 3900-400 = 3500mm

CVE20003_16S2_W06P1.M03 9
BRICKWALL LOAD
• Do not forget to consider the load of brick
wall. Assume unit weight of brick =
19kN/m3
• Change the brick wall load to UDL (in kN/m),
in which brick wall load = brick wall thickness
x unit weight of brick x height of wall
• Therefore for 115mm brick wall, UDL =
0.115 x 19 x 3.5 = 7.65 kN/m
• Factored load of brick wall = 1.2 x 7.65 = 9.2
kN/m

CVE20003_16S2_W06P1.M03 10
BEAM SIZE ASSUMPTION
• Assume beam size from (a) width (at
least width of brickwall, 150-230mm),
(b) depth (400-600mm)
• Say 200 x 500 beam, selfweight = 0.2
x 0.5 x 24 = 2.4kN/m
• Factored selfweight = 2.4 x 1.2 =
3.0kN/m

CVE20003_16S2_W06P1.M03 13
MOMENT DISTRIBUTION METHOD
1. Determine the stiffness factor (K) for each
span, assume EI is constant for the entire
beam.
2. Determine the distribution factor (DF) at the
end of each span.
3. Determine the fixed end moment (FEM) for
each load case at the end of each span.
4. Sum up the total FEM at the end of each
span. Then balance the moment according
to it DF.
5. Repeat the process of Carry over (CO) and
Distribution until the distributed moment is
relatively small.
