This document outlines the author's plans to pursue a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics and Nano-Technology at Carnegie Mellon University. The author is interested in electronic and magnetic materials and devices, stemming from an interest in Condensed Matter physics. As a child, the author was intrigued by how things work and developed a liking for physics. During undergraduate research, the author realized research requires hard work but found they were capable of such efforts while studying piezoelectric materials.

In this statement I, ************, would like to set down the focus of my
future academic and career endeavors, and to justify my chosen areas of
specialization with reference to my background and experience. I plan to study at the graduate level in the fields of Condensed Matter Physics (Nano-Technology). My decision has been motivated by my objective to do meaningful research in these fields and to pursue a career in teaching. As the first step towards realizing my objective, I am seeking admission to the Ph.D. program in Department of Physics at CarnegieMellonUniversity. Among the rich variety of fields in Materials Science, I am particularly interested in the fields of Electronic and Magnetic materials and devices. This interest has stemmed out of my interest in Condensed Matter physics. As a child I was always intrigued by the way things around me work, and quite naturally, I developed a liking towards physics. The fact that majority of complex phenomena around us can be explained using a few simple set of laws never ceased to amaze me. My tryst with research began at the end of my sophomore year when I started my project work. I worked with Prof. T.R. Rama Mohan, (Department of Metallurgical Engineering & Materials Science IIT Bombay), for a period of two months on piezoelectric materials (PZT) and its dielectric properties. I realized for the first time that research was not all about great ideas and instant results, but also about tremendous amount of hard work. I also found out, to my delight, that I was capable of putting in the requisite effort as and when the situation demanded it. During this project I prepared PZT with five different compositions, which exhibits piezoelectric effect
