LIKE vs. AS
LIKE
1. Can be substituted by “Similar to”:
a) What a beautiful house! It’s like a
palace.
b) What does your mom do? – She’s a
teacher like me.
c) It’s raining again. I hate weather like
this.
d) Everybody is ill. Our house is like a
hospital.
e) Mary is the assistant manager. Like the
manager (similar to her boss), she has to
make important decisions.
2. Can be substituted by FOR EXAMPLE:
* I like sports like running, boxing and car
racing.
3. LIKE + a Pronoun
* You should do it like this.
4. Expressions:
- sound like - look like
- feel like

1. Can be substituted by “in the position
of”, “in the form of”:
a) Before I worked as a bus driver, I was a
carpenter.
b) We use the garage as a workshop.
c) Many English words are used as nouns
or verbs.
d) The news of her death came as a big
shock.
2. Such as = For Example
* I like sports such as running, cycling and car
racing.
3. It is used with a Sentence
a) I left everything as I found it.
b) They did as they promised.
4. Expressions:
