ESSAY ESSAY CONTEST
CONTEST
2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment. In order
to commemorate this historic event, American Legion Dept. of Alabama
Post 33 and Women’s Auxiliary Unit 33 are promoting an essay contest.

Topic: "Women’s Suffrage and the Nineteenth Amendment”. What is Women’s


Suffrage? When and where did the Women’s Suffrage Movement begin in the
USA and what started it? Who are some key figures and what were the key
events of the Women’s Suffrage Movement? How did the Movement affect
society? When was the 19th Amendment passed and ratified by Congress and
what specifically did it grant to women? Was this the right thing to do and why?
Explain what happened in the aftermath of the passing of the 19 th Amendment.

Participants: Haleyville High School students (9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Grades).

Prizes: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place winners will be awarded $100, $75, $50, and
$25 cash prizes respectively. Honorable Mentions will also be recognized.

Form: The essay is to be typed, prepared on a computer or word processor,


using black type in a non-script font no smaller than 12 point or larger than 14
point. The length will be 1000-1400 words. Each contestant must do his or her
own original work. Essays without cover pages will be disqualified. The
cover page must include: Title of Essay: “Women’s Suffrage and the 19 th
Amendment” (a subtitle is permitted if written below the topic), the contestant’s
full name, and grade. Do not place your name anywhere except the cover
page. Cover pages will be separated from the body of the essay and assigned
identical alphanumeric designators prior to judging. The total number of words in
the essay should be placed on the last page. A limited vision student may use
Braille, a tape recorder, or very large type. A written transcript must be included,
as well as a teacher’s or physician’s letter attesting to the student’s special need.

Bibliography: Essays must have a bibliography listing all references utilized.


Internet resources, if used, should be cited in a similar format to that used for
printed resources. Add the electronic address used to access the document as
supplementary information. Any essay with information copied directly from
sources without using quotes will be penalized.

Judging: Judging will be done by neutral parties from outside the Haleyville area
to ensure impartial and unbiased evaluation. Judging will be based on historical
accuracy, adherence to topic, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation,
neatness and organization of material. Pictures, maps, drawings, graphics, and
other such additions will not be considered in judging and should not be included.
The decision of the judges is final.

Entry Fee: One bag/can of puppy food for FSFP. Drop off at the HHS office.

Deadline for Submission: Essays must be received NLT 20 November 2020.
