GULF STREAM CURRENT

The Gulf Stream Current is located on the


Eastern side of the United States near
Florida that contains a deep curent
Temperature
The Gulf Stream temperature is very warm
averaging at 7-22 degrees celsius

Speed
The average speed is 4 miles per hour in the
Gulf Stream.

Flow Direction
It moves north along the coast of Florida and
then turns eastward off of North Carolina,
flowing northeast across the Atlantic.

Salinity
The salinity is between 34.90 and 34.97 ppt
and which occupies the deepest layers of the
ocean

Density
The Gulf Stream transports approximately 31
Sv into the North Atlantic ocean.

Upwelling vs. Downwelling


The Gulf Stream is upwelling

Nutrients
The Gulf Stream is also a nutrient stream. It
transports macronutrients (nitrate, phosphate,
silicate) necessary for marine phytoplankton
growth along the eastern continental margin of
the United States from the Straits of Florida to
Cape Hatteras at globally significant rates.

Beneficiaries
Some of the beneficiaries are swordfish, sailfish,
and marlin

Effects on Weather
This strong current of warm water influences
the climate of the east coast of Florida, keeping
temperatures there warmer in the winter and
cooler in the summer than the other
southeastern states.
