Science, Technology and Society

ACTIVITY 1: The Paradox of our Time

Reflection

Science and technology has altered how humans interact with each other and
human life itself. Though it possesses a lot of advantages, it also contains several
disadvantages. For me, one disadvantage that struck humans the most is how they stay
connected. The way we socialize is really impacted by new technologies. Yes, it helped
us socialize with those who are far from us. However, it also made us ignore those who
are in front of us. After reading the essay, I can really say that I have been affected by
technology. When I was younger, I was really talkative at home. I keep on asking
questions and opinions from my parents and siblings and tell them how I feel but with
the technology available today, I have resorted to different means. We have different
search engines now that can answer millions of questions and online friends that we
can ask questions openly; since teenagers prefer to talk to their friends rather that a
family member. This made my relationship with my family a tad bit distant. Another thing
that I realize is how I meet people. Most of the new friends that I know today, I only
know online. I know what their name is and I know what they look like but there is no
real connection between us. Finally, but not the very least, because of technology, I
always stay up too late, scrolling through social media and playing online games which
makes me tired during daytime. Moreover, my love for reading books is decreasing
because I always resort to watching movies since it takes less time but it can never
compare to the use of imagination. Reading the essay made me think to spend more
time and communicate with the closest people around me.
