People commonly misunderstood the term “Education”, mostly the majority would

automatically relate it with the concepts of knowledge and school, well, it’s not totally wrong
since education really happens at school, but it also happens outside school. For some people, an
educated man is someone who knows a lot, someone who has retained tons of information,
someone who can give facts without needing to search the internet. A person who has a broad
knowledge can be valuable, but it isn’t an educated person, it is a knowledgeable person (E.
Burdick, 2014). So with that being said, who is really an educated man?

An educated man is someone who is responsible, just like having the ability to be calm
even during adversity, has self-awareness, and capability in perceiving and managing his own
internal state of emotions. He has the ability to face and control unwanted situations instead of
being swayed by them. He does not just accept what he is being told to but instead, knows how
to make his own decisions, and doesn’t just capable of acquiring knowledge and skills but also
knows how to use them productively.

An educated man is a critical thinker, he has the ability to think or conceptualize, and
solve problems from different perspectives. He knows how to properly and effectively resolve
conflicts with other people. He is rational and reasonable, having the ability to reason
analytically and critically, plus has good judgment.

An educated man has moral values; he has the ability and the discipline to do what is
right, and is committed with the systematic pursuit of truth, as well as the ability to recognized
truth from error. He manages to stay calm even when mistreated by people who doesn’t like him,
having the mindset that one cannot please everyone. He sees people equally, regardless of their
gender, race, religion, nationality, etc. Moreover, he has a cheerful character and is willing to
share joy with others. He also considers being open minded as a virtue. He understands human
nature making him capable of maintaining and improving relationships with others, he has
ethical values and integrity. Most especially, success and glory doesn’t make him arrogant and
corrupt.

An educated man is flexible, meaning he is innovative and can adopt to the changes. As
well as the flexibility to admit when he has done wrong. He has the capacity to endure and
persevere, and misfortunes and failures could not easily defeat him. He can work with different
kinds of people as well as work in different environment. He is capable of doing a lot of things
instead of being stuck in only one skill. He does not fear exploring different things and having
new experiences.

An educated man is someone who is respectful, someone who is not self-centered, who
knows how to cooperate and collaborate effectively with others to get their trust, who values
openness to new ideas and opinions from other people around him. Even when he’s in higher
position from the others, he treats them humbly and kindly, he always thought about the golden
rule, “Don’t do unto others what you don’t want others do unto you.”

If we would see it clearly, education isn’t just simply about the amount of knowledge a
person has, whether professional or vocational, but education is also a matter of behavior or
values. A person who has these qualities is admirable. An educated man is committed with the
rational process of finding truth, self-examination and articulation of truth (E. Burdick, 2014).
An educated man for me is someone who has a sense of responsibility in making the world a
better place to live.
