SUGGESTED ANSWER FOR PHYSICS PAPER 2
QUESTION SUGGESTED ANSWER MARKS
SECTION B
16. a. (i) Electric field is an area where a charge or a current-carrying conductor experience 1
an electric force.
Electric field strength is the electrostatic force per unit charge 1
(ii)When a metal conductor is charged, like charges in the conductor will repel one 1
another until all charges only exist on the surface of the conductor.
Hence, the electric field strength inside the conductor is zero. 1
b. F=eE=5.4x10-14N 1
W=Gain in kinetic energy = Fs = 3.0x10-14J 1
= 3.0x10-14J 1
17. a. 2

For filament lamp, resistance increases at a higher potential difference due to higher 1
temperature.
For the intrinsic semiconductor, the resistance decreases at higher potential difference 1
due to higher temperature
b. The rms value of an alternating current is the value of a constant dc which causes the same 1
rate of heat dissipated through the same resistance.

c. (i) 16kΩ 1
(ii) 32V 1
SECTION C
18. a. (i) Formula to find parallel resistances 1
RAC= 2.5Ω 1
(ii) Formula to find series resistance 1
RAD=3.13Ω 1
ρl 1
b. (i) R= with substitution 1
A
R= 1.6Ω
(ii) VXY= 3V 1
Potential difference per unit length of XY= 1.875Vm-1 1
c. (i) 1
V XP 1
(ii) XP= × XY 1
V XY
= 0.53m from X
(iii) Replace cell of emf 4.5V with one of lower emf. This will reduce the pd across XY and 1
lead to the position of P to be nearer to the end Y for zero current through cell B. 1
19. a. An Ampere is the value of the steady current which flowing in two long, parallel thin wires 2
separated by a distance of 1m in a vacuum, produces a force of 2x10-7Nm-1 between the
wires.
Formula of force between 2 conducting wires and use definition of 1N 1
µo=4π×10-7Nm-1 1

(iii) Yes. 1
Connect the coil and the solenoid in series. The current in coil and solenoid changes 1
direction together.
Force on BC always act downwards and can measure rms value. 1
(iv) I. V=IR=40V 1
II. Use formula of reactance, XL = 4.71Ω 1
V=IXL 1
V= 9.42V 1
20. a. The emf induced in a circuit is proportional to the rate of change of the magnetic flux 2
linkage in the circuit.
b. The charge particle is stationary 1
The charged particle is moving in a plane parallel to the magnetic field lines 1
c. (i) 1

(ii) 2

(iii) When the current is switched on, the current flows in each individual turn of the spring 1
produces a magnetic field in a plane that is perpendicular to the current flow. The North 1
points upwards and the South points downwards. Each turn exerts its own North and 1
South poles. The length of the spring changes due to the magnetic attraction between 1
each turn.
(iv) The spring is compressed 1
(d) As the free end of the spring oscillates vertically, magnetic field of each turn of the current-
carrying conductor change and current induced in the coil. According to Lenz’s law, this 1
will give rise to an induced current that opposes the change that produces it. The direction 1
of motion of each turn changes during the oscillations and hence, the direction of the 1
induced current also changes. Therefore, there will be small fluctuations in the current in
the spring.
