Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Academic Performance refers to the level of education you have

successfully completed and the ability to reach success of the studies.

According to Moraru (2015) some student may not graduate as honor

student in their class, he said that initiative can also indicate academic

performance.

In addition, when athletes are recruiting based on athletic

achievements more than academic achievement it makes it even harder

for athletes to assimilate into the student culture university. Therefore,

they must commit even more time to their academics, further influencing

their social life in a negative manner (Valiente et.al, 2012).

Student-athletes are a member in an organizing competitive sport

supporting by their educational institution in which he or she enroll.

Student-athletes are one of the most noticeable in university (Ferrer,

2018). According to Advertising Manual student-athletes is a participant in

an organized competitive sport sponsored by which requires an optimum

level of performance in both roles. Furthermore, students-athletes are

subject to eligibility rules the require them to maintain a certain Grade

Point Average (GPA).

Student-athletes have a lot of responsibilities maintaining a high

GPA, working hard towards their majors, and working hardest keep their

body the optimum shape.

Being a student is stressful enough, but when you add in all the

elements of being responsible students with the responsibilities of also

being an athlete, basically every minute of every day is systematically

plan.

As a student-athlete you are expected to excel in your academic as

well as your sport. Sports and Academics are two very common terms in

school. Schools are very proud of the academic performance from their

students, and schools are also taking pride in their sports program and

athletes.

However, despite these challenges it seems that student athletes

perform very well in their academic careers by learning time management

skill and diligence by using resources provide by the school. Student

athletes appear to develop a passion for having works which career over

into the classroom.

Some researchers also revealed that several recruited freshmen

student-athletes have moderately developed learning skills, average

intrinsic motivation, common performance anxiety associated with testing,

and do have reasonable listening and attention skills in the classroom

environment (Aragones, 2018).

In addition, at colleges and universities Division 1 athletic programs

were 6 billion enterprises in fiscal year (FY) 2010. That costs rapidly

spiraling upward in recent years. At the root of these rising athletic costs

are the multimillion-dollar coaching contracts, a demand for more staff and

better facilities and increasing scholarship commitments need to keep

pace with rising tuitions (Kirwan & Turner, 2010). At the same time,

colleges and universities have struggled to control cost escalation

elsewhere on campus due to declining state support income as well tuition

prices that have continue to rise (Desrochers & Kirshtein, 2012).

Moreover, some researchers conclude that athletes obtain a higher

college grade point average than those who decide not to fulfill their

eligibility found that development of the total person cannot occur solely in

the classroom, so the co-curricular and extracurricular activities are

provide to create the whole-person. and some argument prove that

extracurricular activities like sports give students the opportunity to learn

and practice the attitudes, skill and values that are important for future

status success.

The researchers want to conduct this study because they want to

know if being a student athlete affects their academic performances. This

in sport like basketball, volleyball, and many more are what the student-

researchers care about.
