Introduction
"The Remarkable Rocket" is a short comic fantasy story for children .It
was first published in 1888 as part of the anthology The Happy Prince
and Other Tales. "The Remarkable Rocket" is about a firework who is
arrogant, selfish, and self-centered.
Theme: self-importance, loneliness, failure, ego and delusion.
Summary
After waiting for a whole year, the prince is finally getting married to a
beautiful Russian princess. To celebrate the marriage, the king throws a
royal ball and plans to have fireworks at midnight. After setting all the
fireworks, the fireworks began to talk each other about romance.
The rocket said that the king's son is fortunate because, he is getting
married on the day on which he will be let off but others didn't agree
with the rocket. During the argument, the rocket starts crying and his
fuse gets wet. Finally the fireworks are set off, all except the rocket. The
next day, the rocket is noticed by a worker. He calls the rocket bad and
throws him into a ditch. A frog found him in the muddy ditch, the rocket
tried to have conversation with the frog, but he didn't listen to him at all;
The frog just said what he want to say.
A duck and a dragonfly came to the rocket, they both didn't listen to him
either. Two boys found him, and they used the rocket as a stick to make
a fire. However, the boys fell asleep while waiting for their water to boil.
After a while, the rocket's fuse is lit by the fire. Thinking he will be
better than other fireworks, he prepares to detonate."This is it! I'll show
everyone how spectacular I am!”But instead of surprising the people, he
goes unnoticed for everyone is asleep.
The rocket thinks he's the reason the Prince and Princess are getting
married, and he doesn't understand that he's just a part of the fireworks
show to celebrate their marriage.
In fact, his self-importance is so exaggerated that he imagines he's the
most important being in the entire world; he loves to hear himself talk,
and if anyone won't listen to him, he says it's their loss.
But all this self-importance and egotism go even deeper, when one of the
boys calls him an "old stick," the rocket insists that the boy must have
said "GOLD stick," instead.
Conclusion
People don' t like the selfish person like the rocket who is always
speaking about himself.
Give some chance to others for speaking their own opinion even if they
have different perspectives, we should respect others' opinion.
