OBJECTIVES
The proposed design for the performing arts center aims to
aid in the improving of the economy, tourism, and history and
culture of Pila, Laguna with the following:
1. Create a suitable art-showcasing environment for the
performers, audience, and staff,
2. Increase the tourism of Pila, Laguna and;
3. Promote the history and culture of Pila, Laguna by
incorporating a Philippine Spanish colonial architectural
style. Lot with Bearings

CONCEPT TRANSLATION
The concept of the proposed design is a modern take
on “Bahay na Bato”. Bahay na Bato is a Filipino architecture
during the Spanish colonial times. The aforementioned
structure is still evident in Pila, Laguna as most houses in the
neighborhood resemble those. To ensure its strength and to
be able to last longer, sturdier materials such as concrete will
be used instead of the usual wooden second floor level.

Analysis:

 The site is placed in a long rectangular lot with access

to three roads. Being a community lot, it has the
advantage to be easily seen and be accessed by
potential visitors.
TOPOGRAPHIC MAP Analysis:

 From the given maps, it can be seen that the elevation

throughout Pila is only correlated with one color. Thus,
the assumption that the lot in Pila can be considered
flat or there is little to no difference of elevation.

GEOLOGIC SURVEY

 The municipal center of Pila is situated at

approximately 14° 14' North, 121° 22' East, in the
island of Luzon.
 Elevation at these coordinates is estimated at 7.1
meters or 23.4 feet above mean sea level.

ENGINEERING DESIGN CONCEPTS
Natural Lighting and Ventilation: Louvers.
To ensure that less heat from the direct sunlight that
will enter the building, Louvers will be utilized as they are
capable of minimizing the amount of sunlight while providing
airflow for a cooler interior

Shading and Ventilation: Vertical Gardens `

With a wire mesh material, Vertical Gardens will be

utilized not only to provide greenery and aesthetics but also to
maximize the space of the lot, provide shade, and reduce
carbon footprint by increasing the air quality.
Vertical gardens help to reduce the carbon footprint of
a building by filtering pollutants and carbon dioxide out of the
air, which also benefits those living nearby as the quality of the
air is improved. Exterior wall vertical gardens also help to
reduce heat absorption, which can result in significant energy
savings in areas where people rely on air-conditioning during
the warmer parts of the year. (Source:

Rainwater Harvesting: Vertical Tanks
To lessen the space being occupied by regular sized
tanks, vertical tanks that are slimmer and longer will be used
as reservoirs from rainwater collection. In addition, Biophilic
design is also achieved through the vertical gardens that are
used to cover the appearance of the tanks

Structural: Over Hanging Eaves

As the design of the proposed performing arts center is
inspired by the bahay-na-bato, overhanging eaves which were
utilized in the Spanish colonial homes will also be used.
Furthermore, over hanging eaves can protect the walls, doors,
and windows from the rain as well as providing extra shade
from unwanted sunlight.
