Religion should be taught in schools

Just as the soul fills the body, so God fills the world. Just as the soul bears the body, so God endures
the world. Just as the soul sees but is not seen, so God sees but is not seen. Just as the soul feeds the
body, so God gives food to the world. Good Morning everyone. Today, I Raghav Shrivastav of class
12A1 is here to speak against the motion that religion should be taught in schools. Religion is a very
extensive term and has been interpreted differently over the years. This varied interpretation of the
same religion by various people is one reason why religion may be unfit to be taught in schools. For
example, one cult of religion may preach a particular ideology, but the same may not be supported
by the other cults.

Religion in the modern world is not limited to values and ethics inculcated through religious beliefs.
It has developed into a business of fear, where religion has actually convinced people that there's an
invisible man living in the sky who keeps track of everything you do; every minute of every day. And
that man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten
things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke, where he will send you to live and suffer forever
and ever 'til the end of time! This fear curbs man's curiosity to find and explore the true happiness
he can discover himself. The purpose of religion should not be to make a man believe that this is the
right way. The sole purpose of a religion should be to enlighten a man to be able to choose the right
way. The knowledge a man can gain by erring and righting his wrongs is far greater than any
knowledge he can be preached or taught.

Now another point is that religion is a very sensitive topic. Even if the religion's preacher errs even a
little, it will create ripples of wrong messages an information flowing throughout the society that
may create religious and social barriers. The last point that I would like to mention is that if religion
was so strong, so powerful and so helping, why did Saints like Mahavir and Gautam Buddha
renounce the world to find inner peace. They could just have followed some religion. Also, different
religions preached at different places may create polar thinking in the same society. Many may still
argue that the ultimate teaching of each religion is the same. Still, the understanding of different
people of different religions is very different, which ultimately demolishes the true essence. So
concluding, I would like to say that religion is a very delicate matter of personal trust and belief that
should not be tampered by anyone else. Instead, moral values and cultural ethics should be taught in
schools to show children the way of good.
