Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 4 Self-Learning Module 1 on Materials that Absorb

Water

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

EXPECTATIONS

This module is designed and written to help you understand

more about matter and how to group them easily according to their
properties. It will guide you to master the lesson on the ability of
materials to absorb water. The scope of this module permits it to
be used in many different learning situations. The language used
recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the
order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with
the other learning materials you are now using.
The module is about materials that absorb water.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. describe and classify materials based on the ability to
absorb water
2. apply knowledge on the use of materials that absorb water
on the real-life situation; and
3. appreciate the use of materials that absorb water in our
day to day activities.

PRETEST

Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter
on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Describe what will happen to the sponge when placed in a

basin with water? The sponge will -------
A. absorb water C. becomes smaller
B. becomes bigger D. not absorb water
2. Which of the following materials will absorb water?
A. glass, mirror, fork
B. box, paper, metal spoon
C. cloth, cotton, tissue paper
D. plastic wrapper, aluminum foil, rubber ball
3. You want to wipe the spilled water on the dining table. Which
of the following materials will you use?

4. Why do fish vendors use a plastic bag instead of a paper bag
when you buy fish?
A. A plastic bag cannot hold heavy fishes.
B. A paper bag is hard to find while a plastic bag is easy.
C. A paper bag cannot be easily tear down when getting wet
D. A plastic bag does not absorb water that can hold wet
fishes.
5. Why do some materials absorb water?
A. Some materials are hard.
B. Some materials are made of plastic.
C. Some materials are made of rubber.
D. Some materials have tiny holes that let the water in.

RECAP

During your grade 3 Science class, you learned about the

three phases of matter; solid, liquid, and gas. Look at the pictures
then write if it is solid, liquid or gas.

1. 2. 3.

Facemask Alcohol Oxygen

4.. 5.

Water Bar soap

LESSON

Matter aside from its phases can also be classified according

to their properties. One of these is its ability to absorb water. Some
materials can absorb water, others do not

Materials can be classified based on their ability to absorb

water. Absorb means to take in something like a liquid in a natural
way. Materials that absorb water are called Porous Materials. It
is full of tiny holes that allow air (gasses) or liquid (fluid) to pass
through.

Let us take a look at the pictures below. Observe the sponge

in the first picture. Describe it. What happens to the sponge when
we soak it in a basin with soap and water?

Pic 1-sponge with small holes Pic 2- sponge dripping soapy water

The first picture shows that the sponge has small holes.
These holes will absorb water, thus makes the sponge heavy. When
we squeeze or hold the sponge tightly it will drip droplets of soapy
water as shown in the second picture.

Let us have another example when you are in the swimming

pool, you wear a swimsuit, or rash guard, just like what is shown
in the picture. What have you observed when you removed and
squeezed your swimsuit or rash guard?

Pic 1- children wearing swimwear Pic 2- example of a cloth (Sando)

There are droplets of water coming from your swimwear
because it absorbs water. Your swimwear is made of cloth. Cloth
or fabric is an absorbent material. It can be made into hand
towels, handkerchief, and rags.
Try to get a cotton ball and a glass of water. Put the cotton
ball in a glass of water, after a few minutes, lift and squeeze it.
Observe what will happen. Do you think cotton absorbs water?
Why do you think so? What are the characteristics of cotton that
makes it porous materials? Cotton is an absorbent material too.
It is used to make cotton buds, cotton pads, and diapers.
It is important to know the ability of materials in absorbing
water because it will help us to decide on what materials to use.
There are different household chores that we use materials that
absorb water like washing dishes, wiping off spilled liquids,
cleaning our car or motorcycle, and cleaning the windows, floor,
and walls of our house. Absorbing materials are also used in
cleaning and treating our wound, wiping off our sweat, and
cleaning our body during bath.
But not all materials have the ability to absorb water. Take
a look at the picture. Observe the cup soak in soapy water on the
first picture. Describe it. Does it have tiny holes?

Pic 1-plastic cup soak in soapy water Pic 2- plastic cup lifted from soapy water

The cup is made of plastic, it doesn’t have a tiny hole and

does not absorb water. This material is called non-porous. Non-
porous materials do not allow water to pass through.
ACTIVITIES

For us to learn more about materials that absorb water, let

us try to use the materials you have at home and answer the
Activity 1 “TOUR AND COLLECT” you can do the activity
together with your little brother or sister, if you have.

ACTIVITY 1 “TOUR AND COLLECT”

What to do:
1. Make a tour inside your house, observe different materials.
