Global Student Experience

Registration at the “Kreisbüro” (Residents' Registration Office)

After having entered Switzerland, all students are required to register within 14 days at the local
residents' registration office (“Einwohnerkontrolle”, or “Kreisbüro” in the 12 districts of the city of
Zurich).
Please find the address list of the offices and a link for finding out which office is in charge of your
district in Zurich on page 2 of this document.

Please bring the following with you:


• EU/EFTA Nationalities:
o valid passport or ID card
o student card
o signed rental contract
o confirmation from Global Student Experience that you are an exchange student
o application for residence permit (in German: “Gesuch um
Aufenthaltsbewilligung”). Students from the Swiss-European Mobility Programme
have received this document in the email “Welcome Package”.
o registration fee CHF 40 (students from non-European universities may have to pay
more)
o issuing fee identification card CHF 10 (students not from the Swiss European
Mobility Programme will have to pay more)
o postal charges CHF 5
At the residents’ registration office you will get an appointment for the registration of your
biometric identification. After the registration of the biometric identification, the residence
permit will be sent to your Swiss address.

• Other Nationalities
o valid passport
o student card
o signed rental contract
o issuing fee authorization CHF 95 (does not apply for students coming through the Swiss-
European Mobility Programme)
o processing fee registration of biometric identification CHF 20
o issuing fee identification card CHF 22
o registration fee CHF 40
o postal charges CHF 5
o only for exchange students without visa obligations (Japanese, Malaysian,
Singaporean or New Zealand nationalities): confirmation from Global Student
Experience that you are an exchange student and the application for residence permit (in
German: “Gesuch um Aufenthaltsbewilligung”). At the residents’ registration office you will
get an appointment for the registration of your biometric identification. After the registration of
the biometric identification, the residence permit will be sent to your Swiss address.

 Exchange Students with a Swiss Passport


o valid Swiss passport

o confirmation from Global Student Experience that you are an exchange student
o It might be that you need a certificate of residence (“Heimatschein”); you can get

this document from the registrar’s office (“Zivilstandsamt”) of your place of


citizenship (“Bürgerort”) noted in your passport
o registration fee CHF 40
