EVIDENCE: CULTURAL LITERACY AROUND THE WORLD

When I have vacation, I like to travel to San Andres Island, 1 or 2 time for a year, I love this place!
I appreciate the culture language, music and religion.
Obviously I love the beautiful beaches, landscapes, sea, food and people.
Religion in San Andres is a fundamental part of the history and culture of the island which is the
motor of their social life as well as political and family life, if you know their culture and religion you
could understand about their migratory movements, the habits, idiosyncrasies, and values, artistic
manifestations such as dance, painting, poetry and music of the Islanders.

The islanders have the richest and varied religious mix in the country, whose religious rights are
protected by the Constitution of 1991. English Protestant churches are the ones that stand out in this
environment.
The most common languages spoken and religion of the islander, who live on the archipelago, is
Spanish speakers practice Catholicism. Those who speak Creole are practiced Protestantism.
Additionally, the island people has other faiths: Jewish, Islamic, and the Rastafarian movement right
now.

The last vacation I can found a new movement called “Rastafarian movement” it is religious and
political movement, begun in Jamaica in the 1930s and adopted by many groups around the globe,
that combines Protestant Christianity, mysticism, and a Pan-African political consciousness. There are
who adapted this movement.
Those who speak Creole are was called the Raizal culture of the Afro-Caribbean ethnic group. It is
now more a blend of Latin American and English-Caribbean culture that is witnessed in the island. I

found that other minority groups who live in the island are the Chinese and the Middle Eastern people
who has stores and supermarket, perfumeries etc.
San Andres is also famous for its local version of music that includes calypso, soca, reggae and
church music. Concerts are in May at the Old Coliseum during the "Green Festival".
Other celebrations and events in the island are the independence day celebrations on 20 July and the
"Coconut Queen “festival held in November.
I have the opportunity to know the San Andres Island House Museum, it is beautiful, this place is
dedicated to show and educate the tourist about the culture and customs of the natives of San Andres
and Providence., there are examples of typical architecture, customs, dance, music and island
gastronomy. We enjoy to dance Calypso and soca when we were there last year.
For me the spiritual place of most importance in San Andres is found in the neighborhood La Loma.
which is wonderful region of the island, with gardens and Caribbean music and beautiful ocean view,
also pretty wooden church stands tall where, each Sunday the Baptist Community.do their meeting.
This place carries an important tradition of San Andres History.
The Baptist Church on La Loma is the spiritual, cultural, which is an epicenter of the Native
community
