Dear Principal Waters:

My name is Colt Lien and I am interested in teaching within the Denver Public Schools at George
Washington High. I am not originally from the Denver area, so I have discovered this opening through a
job posting, as well as a family friend that teaches in the Denver area. However, after reading more about
the culture and core beliefs of George Washinton High, I am fiercely passionate about teaching in this
community.

In researching the mission of Denver Schools and George Washington, I found myself deeply connected
to the type of community that is being fostered within the students, as well as the staff. The Denver Plan
resonates within the type of educator and mentor I strive to be. I believe I can be a dynamic educator that
helps achieve the goals of creating a foundation of success and preparing our students for the College or
Career life. My entire teaching philosophy is based upon the idea of truly educating our students so that
they will be prepared to carry their knowledge with them as they enter the workforce or a university. For
example, in my work as a church choir director that built a program from scratch, I have not simply
taught my singers music, but rather the foundational skills necessary to continue making and
understanding music after I leave.

Humbly realizing that I am a first-year teacher and that others may have years of experience that I don’t
have, I would also like to express my confidence in the position. As shown in my resumé, I have put forth
a very large amount of effort and initiative in my undergrad to make myself a strong contender in the pool
of applicants. For example, I alone founded an entire ensemble and handled the musical aspects, as well
as the logistical challenges, demonstrating my drive for opportunity. That drive is the same aspect that got
me a church music job in my Junior year; a job in which I handle many of the same responsibilities that
come with a position in academia. With these achievements, I continuously exceed expectations of the
faculty at Concordia and they can attest to my aptitude in music and education.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to consider my application and I will appreciably look
forward to hearing from you soon. If you would like to discuss anything in my resumé, cover letter, or
application, I am happy to offer any clarifications.

Sincerely,

Colt Lien
