INTRODUCTION TO TOURISM IN INDIA

INTRODUCTION TO TOURISM:
Tourism is the act of travel for predominantly recreational or leisure purposes, and also refers to
the provision of services in support of this act. According to the world tourism organization,
tourists are people who “travel to stay in places outside their usual environment for not more
than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of
an activity remunerated from within the place visited”,

Tourism, however long its incident duration, has become an extremely popular, global activity.
In 2004, there were over 763 million international tourist arrivals.

As a service industry, tourism has numerous tangible and intangible elements. Major tangible
elements include transportation, accommodation, and other components of a hospitality industry.
Major intangible elements relate to the purpose or motivation for becoming a tourist, such as
rest, relaxation, the opportunity to meet new people and experience other cultures, or simply to
do something different and have an adventure.

Tourism is vital for many countries, due to the income generated by the consumption of goods
and services by tourists, the taxes levied on business in tourism businesses, and the opportunity
for employment and economic advancement by working in the industry. For these reasons
NGO’s and government agencies’ may sometimes promote a specific region as a tourist
destination and support the development of a tourism industry in that area. The contemporary

phenomenon of mass tourism may sometimes result in overdevelopment of, however alternative
forms of tourism sectors eco-tourism seek to a word such outcomes by pursuing tourism in a
sustainable way.

The terms tourism and travel are sometimes used interchangeably. In this context travel has a
similar definition to tourism but implies a more purposeful journey. The terms tourism and
tourist are sometimes used pejoratively to imply a shallow interest in the cultures or locations
visited by tourists.

One of the earliest definitions of tourism was provided by the Austrian economist Hermann Von
Schullard in 1910, who defined it as, “sum total of operators, mainly of an economic nature,
which directly relate to the entry, stay and movement of foreigners inside and outside a certain
country, city or a region.”

In 1981 international association of scientific experts in tourism defined tourism in terms of

activities selected by choice and undertaken outside of home environment.

DEFINITION BY UNWTO: -

Tourism defined as “the activities of persons traveling to and staying in place outside their usual
environment for more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes”.

INTRODUCTION TO INDIA: -

In every aspect, India is on massive exaggerated scale which can be compared to the superlative
Himalayan mountains. It is set apart from the rest of Asia by the supreme continental wall of the
Himalayas.

It touches the three large water bodies. This triangular peninsula defined by the Bay of Bengal to
the east, the Arabian sea to the west, and the Indian ocean to the south has in its store wealth of
the natural resources.

The abundance of vast mountain ranges, exciting national parks, enchanting rivers, roaring seas,
silent valleys, thrilling waterfalls, historical monuments, holy temples, and diverse tribal cultures
added with hospitality of its people, India offers innumerable opportunities for tourism.

The tourism industry in India is economically important and is growing rapidly. The world travel
and tourism council calculated that tourism generated INR6.4 trillion or 6.66% of the nation’s
GDP in 2012. It supported 39.5 million jobs, 7.7% of its total employment. The sector is
predicted to grow at an average annual rate of 7.9% from 2013 to 2023, this gives India the third
among the countries with the fastest growing tourism over the next decades India has a large
medical tourism sector which is expected to grow to an estimated rate of 30% annually to reach
about 95 billion by 2015.

According to provisional statistics 6.29 million foreign tourist arrived in India in 2011, an
increase of 8.9% from 5.78 million in 2010. This ranks India as the 38 th country in the world in
terms of foreign tourist arrivals domestic tour visits to all states and union territories numbered
1036.35 million in 2012, an increase of 16.5% from 2011. The most represented countries are the
United States (16%) and the United Kingdom (12.6%). In 2011, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and
Delhi were the most popular states for foreign tourists. domestic tourists visited the states Uttar
Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu most frequently. Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Agra
have been the four most visited cities of India by foreign tourists during the year 2011.

The travel and tourism competitiveness report 2013 ranks India 65th out of 144 countries overall.
The report ranks the price competitiveness of India’s tourism sector 20 th of 144 countries. It
mentions that India has quite good air transport (ranked 39 th), particularly given the country’s
stage of development, and reasonable ground transport infrastructure (ranked 42 nd). Some other
aspects of its tourism infrastructure remain somewhat underdeveloped however. The nation has a
very few hotel rooms per capital by international comparison and low AT penetration. The
tourism organization reported that India’s receipts from tourism during 2012 ranked 16th in the
world and 7th among Asian and Pacific countries.

In the process, the ministry consults and collaborates with other stakeholders in the sector
including various central ministries/agencies, state government, union territories and the
representatives of the private sector. Concerted efforts are being made to promote new forms of
tourism such as rural, cruise, medical and eco-tourism. The ministry also maintains the incredible
India campaign.

THE tourism business is at least 2000 years old. It began when wealthy citizens of ancient Rome,
deciding they would rather spend their summers away from the city, took trips to the countryside
and the coast.

A tourism industry soon sprang up to cater for the Romans ‘travel and accommodation needs ,
and for a while it thrived .But Roman tourism ended with its empire .and for hundreds of years
the turbulent economic , social and military situation in Europe made frequent ,safe travel out of
the question

During the medieval era, however, tourism again appeared thanks to a growing interest in
pilgrimages. The organizers arranged the tourism basics of itineraries and places to eat and sleep.
And from records such as Chaucer’s Canterbury tales, it’s evident that many pilgrims were keen

to relax and enjoy themselves as well as visit a holy shrine. In fact, it’s from the old English
word haligdaeg [holy day] that “holiday “derives.

But it was two other factors hundreds of years later that encouraged the start of more widespread
and regular tourism health and culture. Those who could afford to do so began to visit the spa
and seaside towns of eighteenth century Europe to benefit from the spring waters and fresh air.
Others, most notably the English, took educational holidays to countries such as Italy with the
intention of studying paintings, sculptures and architecture, and visiting historical sites.

Straight forward leisure tourism took hold when industrialization across Europe gave rise to an
affluent middle class with an increasing amount of free time. Entrepreneurs started to build
tourist hotels with an infrastructure of roads, carriages and ferries. Tourism began to take shape
as an international industry.

The industry was popular and steadily successful from the early nineteenth century. But for the
most part, it was expensive and limited to a small number of locations. Then everything suddenly
changed. In the 1990s, a growing number of people had disposable incomes, and with this extra
money came a desire for a different lifestyle. At the same time, reasonably –priced commercial
aircraft were able to carry passengers to and from any airport in the world.

NATURE OF TOURISM: -

Nature tourism responsible travel to natural areas, which conserves the environment and
improves the welfare of the people.

It is tourism based on the natural attractions of an area. Examples include bird watching,
photography, stargazing, camping, hiking, hunting, fishing and visiting parks. These experiential
tourists are interested in a diversity of natural and cultural resources. They want what is real and
they want what is real, and they want to be immersed in a rich natural, cultural, or historical
experience.

From the standpoint of conservation, nature-based tourism provides incentives for local
communities and landowners to conserve wildlife habitats upon which the industry depends –it
promotes conservation by placing an increased value on remaining natural areas. As nature
tourism becomes more important to the local economy, communities have additional incentive to
conserve remaining natural areas for wildlife and wildlife enthusiasts.

As nature tourism becomes more important to the local economy. Communities have additional
incentive to conserve their remaining natural areas for wildlife and wildlife enthusiasts.

The nature-based tourism efforts in Texas will continue to focus on achieving habitat
conservation by providing information and assistance to private landowners ,communities
,businesses , and local community leaders wishing to make nature-based tourism an integral part
of their business and community .By empowering people at the local level, we hope to build and
provide guidance to a growing industry that holds great promise for sustainable economic
development and conservation of wildlife habitat

INTRODUCTION TO IATA:

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is a trade association of the world’s airlines.

Consisting of 278 airlines, primarily major carriers, representing 117 countries, the IATA's

member airlines account for carrying approximately 83% of total Available Seat Miles air traffic.
IATA supports airline activity and helps formulate industry policy and standards. It is
headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada with Executive Offices in Geneva, Switzerland.

IATA was formed in April 1945 in Havana, Cuba. It is the successor to the International Air
Traffic Association, which was formed in 1919 at The Hague, Netherlands. At its founding,
IATA consisted of 57 airlines from 31 countries. Much of IATA’s early work was technical and
it provided input to the newly created International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which
was reflected in the annexes of the Chicago Convention, the international treaty that still governs
the conduct of international air transport today.

The Chicago Convention couldn’t resolve the issue of who flies where, however, and this has
resulted in the thousands of bilateral air transport agreements in existence today. The benchmark
standard for the early bilateral was the 1946 United States-United Kingdom Bermuda
Agreement.

IATA was also charged by the governments with setting a coherent fare structure that avoided
cut-throat competition but also looked after the interests of the consumer. The first Traffic
Conference was held in 1947 in Rio de Janeiro and reached unanimous agreement on some 400
resolutions.

Aviation grew rapidly over the following decades and IATA’s work duly expanded.

Aviation, or air transport, refers to the activities surrounding mechanical flight and

the aircraft industry. Aircraft includes fixed-wing and rotary-wingtypes, morphable wings, wing-
less lifting bodies, as well as lighter-than-air craft such as balloons and airships.

Aviation began in the 18th century with the development of the hot air balloon, an apparatus
capable of atmospheric displacement through buoyancy. Some of the most significant
advancements in aviation technology came with the controlled gliding flying of Otto
Lilienthal in 1896; then a largest step in significance came with the construction of the first
powered airplane by the Wright brothers in the early 1900s. Since that time, aviation has been
technologically revolutionized with the introduction of the jet which permitted a major form
of transport throughout the world.

OVERVIEW OF REPORT:
The global aviation community is facing significant challenges. As demand for air transportation
services increase, States are faced with finding solutions to safely increase capacity, efficiency,
and access, e.g. to terrain challenged airports. These constraints are largely a result of reliance
upon conventional ground-based navigation aids (e.g., VOR, NDB, ILS), which limit routes and
procedures to the physical locations of ground based navigation aids. These ground-based
systems have served the aviation community well since  inception; however, they do not permit
the flexibility of point-to-point operations available with PBN to meet the challenges of today
and the future.

ICAO has adopted PBN to address these challenges. Through the application of Area Navigation
(RNAV) and Required Navigation Performance (RNP) specifications, PBN provides the means
for flexible routes and terminal procedures. The illustrations depict the constraints associated
with conventional, ground-based sensor specific routes/procedures and the flexibility and
benefits of performance-based, non-sensor specific navigation (both RNAV and RNP)

Environment-Friendly
 Reduces emissions by saving fuel  Allows aircraft to descend from
 3.19 kg of CO2 emissions are eliminated for high altitudes to airports at minimum

every kg of fuel savings thrust settings

 Achieved via shorter/vertically optimized PBN  Consistent, precise paths can be
flight paths routed to avoid noise sensitive areas
 IATA's estimations indicate shorter PBN routes  Noise levels can be reduced via use
globally could cut CO2 emissions by 13 million of optimized profile descents
tonnes per year  Allows lower, quieter thrust levels.
 Provides a mechanism for optimized profile
descents
. PBN is helping the global aviation community reduce aviation congestion, conserve fuel,
protect the environment, reduce the impact of aircraft noise and maintain reliable, all-weather
operations, even at the most challenging airports. It provides operators with greater flexibility
and better operating returns while increasing the safety of regional and national airspace systems.

Improving Safety
 Reduces the risk of Controlled  Aircraft arrive at the runway aligned with the
Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) centerline: same configuration & same speed every
accidents time.
 Provides very precise lateral  Reduces diversions caused by adverse weather
and vertical flight paths conditions
 Provides consistent,  Enables aircraft to reliably access airports with
predictable and stabilized lower visibility restrictions
approaches

  IMPROVING OPERATING RESULTS

 Reduces fuel waste through shorter  Provides a path for airline growth as
flight tracks optimized profile descents and emissions caps are implemented around the

fewer diversions world

 Enables more direct and closely spaced  Provides a degree of precision approach
parallel tracks en route for increased fuel capability without the investment required for
efficiency and reduced flight time variance expensive ground-based infrastructure
 Creates new market opportunities by  Improves customer satisfaction/loyalty by
providing safe access to terrain and weather allowing airlines to more consistently access
challenged destinations airports serviced at higher on-time rates

Increasing Airspace Capacity

 Increases traffic capacity through more efficient routes and smoother flows
 Reduces airspace conflicts between adjacent airports and prohibited or special use
airspace

The research on the international airline transport association is very much of value for me. In
general, I was able to gain much more knowledge about the Organization, from both the working
perspective and the cultural perspective. This research has brought me much more interest in
learning and working in IATA Thus the organization would keep up their motto and their aim in
the airline sector and would develop worldwide. I would take this opportunity to thank my
faculty members who had been a pillar for me for completion of this report on IATA.
