GENERAL LAYOUT OF

NALDURG - 2 (YEDOLA) BARRAGE


Tal. Tuljapur, Dist. Osmanabad
1.0 INTRODUCTION:
The Naldurg -2 barrage is proposed to be constructed across River Bori,
near village Naldurg. It is located at a distance of 2.50 Km from existing
Naldurg-1 barrage along river reach. This barrage is part of Krishna
Marathwada Lift Irrigation scheme. It is enlisted in proposed water storage
structures of first stage of Krishna Marathwada lift irrigation scheme.
Naldurg-2 barrage is included in the Krishna – Marathwada Irrigation
Project, Administratively Approved by Government of Maharashtra, Water
Resource Department vide letter No. Krishna/0709/ (437/09) Dated
27.08.2009. Naldurg-2 (Yedola) barrage is proposed to store 4.629 Mm 3 of
water.
The proposed site is nearly 20 kms from Taluka place Tuljapur and 60km.
from Dist. place Osmanabad.
The proposed site is located at:
Latitude 170 37' 78" and Longitude 760 17 ' 52"

The proposal for preparation of General Layout is received vide
Superintending Engineer, Osmanabad Irrigation Circle, Osmanabad’s

issued study drawings in order to get opinion regarding availability of
foundation at deeper level and river sluice in accordance with WRD,

-2008/(312/2008)/³ÖÖÝÖ -5/ ´ÖÖê¯ÖÏ-2 dated 04.06.2014.
Various design considerations vide field office opinions and Government Of
Maharashtra’s directives are illustrated in corresponding sections of this
report.
2.0 SCOPE
This report deals with the General Layout of the Naldurg-2 (YEDOLA)
barrage Taluka Tuljapur, Dist. Osmanabad
3.0 HYDROLOGY
3.1 CATCHMENT AREA :
The total catchment area up to the site is 382.08 sq. kms. & free catchment
area downstream of existing Naldurg Barrage-1 is 11.74 sq kms. The
distance between Naldurg-1 and Naldurg-2 barrage along river reach is 2.5
Km.
3.2 FLOOD STUDY :
Due to unavailability of river gauge station in surrounding of this project it
was not possible to compare 1 in 100 years flood with observed flood, this
issue was communicated to WRD, Government of Maharashtra vide Chief
Engineer (WR), Water resources department, Aurangabad’s Marathi letter
ŸÖÖÓ¿ÖÖ- 6/¬ÖÖ- 189/5405 dated 28/07/2014. In accordance
with the rationale communicated by field office and vide Government of
Maharashtra’s Circular dated 04/06/2014, WRD Government of
Maharashtra tendered concurrence to (SPF) flood value of 3759.00 Cumecs
†ÖÀ¾ÖÖÃÖ®Ö -2008/ (312/2008)/³ÖÖÝÖ
vide letter no.
-5/ ´ÖÖê¯ÖÏ-2 dated 31/07/2014.
4.0 APPROACH TO BARRAGE SITE:
Naldurg (Yedola) barrage-2 is 20 Km from Tuljapur Taluka and 60 Kms from
Osmanabad district. The nearest railway station is Solapur and it is 57 Km
away from Naldurg (Yedola) barrage.
5.0 GEOLOGY AT BARRAGE SITE:
To ascertain the geological condition at barrage site, total 13 bores are
explored on the centerline. The detailed location and availability of rock as
indicated by the bores taken on center line of barrage alignment is
tabulated as under.

Since fresh rock with 70 % core recovery is available at more than 12 m
depth, CDO vide letter dated 28/08/2014 communicated field officers to get
concurrence from WRD, Government Of Maharashtra in relevance with
†ÖÀ¾ÖÖÃÖ®Ö -2008/

(312/2008)/³ÖÖÝÖ -5/ ´ÖÖê¯ÖÏ-2 dated 04/06/2014. Executive
director vide letter dated 17/07/2015 processed regarding this concurrence.
WRD, Government of Maharashtra vide letter dated 18/11/2015
communicated to field that, the technical sanction for this project is already
accorded by chief engineer and hence such an approval from Government
at this stage is not admissible. Government also illustrated that if there is
any increase in cost of project due to change in design because of higher
foundation depth, this issue shall be brought to notice of competent
authority which accord administrative approval.
In view of this the foundation is adopted as proposed in geological report
which is in relevance with the core recovery and fresh rock availability. The
foundation levels shown in the drawing are tentative and are subjected to
change depending upon the quality of rock met with during actual
execution.
6.0 ALIGNMENT OF BARRAGE:
The total length of barrage planned is 104.00 m including end piers. An
approach embankment is proposed on one side. Alignment of barrage is
straight and proposed at right angle to the River course. Suitable
arrangement shall be provided to avoid erosion and outflanking, as per site
situation.
7.0 CONTROL LEVELS:
The various control levels fixed for the barrage are described as below.
7.1 SILL LEVEL:
In the proposal received from field office, 12 m x 10 m vertical lift type gates
are proposed with the sill level at R.L. 512.00 m. Sill level is about 3.77 m
above average river bed level. CDO vide letter dated 28/08/2014 requested
field office to give opinion regarding sill level and provision of river sluice in
accordance with Government Circular No. †ÖÀ¾ÖÖÃÖ®Ö
-2008/(312/2008)/³ÖÖÝÖ -5/ ´ÖÖê¯ÖÏ-2 dated
04/06/2014 which directs that sill level of the barrage shall be kept at
river bed level. Chief engineer (WR), WRD, Aurangabad vide letter dated
20/02/2016 affirmed no change in sill level as storage of project is against
proposed sill and gate height. Field office also affirmed that there is no need
to provide river sluice as there is no provision of providing water to
downstream of this barrage. In view of this the sill level is proposed as
512.000 m. This sill level is about 3.75 m above river bed level and therefore
Government approval shall be taken for this provision.
7.2 FULL RESERVOIR LEVEL (FRL) :
The project is planned to store 0.27 TMC i.e. 4.629 Mm 3 water as per the
approved project report of Krishna-Marathwada lift irrigation scheme. As
per the data supplied by field officers, this capacity is available at R.L.
522.000 m. So, the full reservoir level is proposed at R.L. 522.000 m as
proposed by the field officers.
7.3 HIGH FLOOD LEVEL (HFL):
As illustrated earlier the flood value (SPF) as approved by Government Of
Maharashtra’s Marathi†ÖÀ¾ÖÖÃÖ®Ö -2008/
Letter No.
(312/2008)/³ÖÖÝÖ -5/ ´ÖÖê¯ÖÏ-2 dated 31/07/2014 is
considered for estimating HFL. Accordingly HFL at barrage site is worked out
as 514.350 m.
7.4 AFFLUX HIGH FLOOD LEVEL (AHFL):
It is proposed to provide 12.00 m x 10.00 m. size, 7 nos. of vertical lift type
gates in 8 pears including end piers along with divide wall on both sides. An
earthen embankment is proposed on one side
7.5 TOP OF PIER
The free board above Full Reservoir Level is proposed as 1.00 m as FRL is
above AHFL and hence the pier top level is worked out to R.L. 523.000 m.
7.6 TOP OF BRIDGE (T.B.L.):
For general layout purpose prestressed bridge with depth of 1.50 m is
proposed. The bridge top level is worked out as RL 524.500 m. The type of
bridge shall be decided by field authority considering provisions in tender.
8.0 CONTROL LEVELS PROPOSED:
The final control levels proposed are as follows:
a) Sill level of barrage : 512.000 m.
b) Full Reservoir Level (F.R.L.) : 522.000 m.
c) High Flood Level (H.F.L.) : 514.350 m.
d) AHFL : 514.740m.
e) Top of pier : 523.000 m.
f) Top of bridge (T.B.L.) : 524.500 m.
9.0 GENERAL LAYOUT OF THE BARRAGE:
The general layout of the barrage is proposed as below:

The earthen embankments shall be extended suitability up to banks on both
side of barrage. The earthen embankment is tentative and shall be revised
at the time of detail design after general layout approval.
10.0 DETAILS OF COMPONENTS:
10.1 WEIR FOR OVERFLOW SECTION:
At present 7 gates are proposed of size 12 x 10 m & pier width 2.5 m. The
overflow section of the barrage is proposed from R.D 104.50 m to 208.50 m.
Sill level is proposed at R.L 512.000 m. The upstream side of crest above GL
is provided with a slope of 0.10 :1 and then vertical towards foundation,
while the downstream slope of 2:1 is proposed. These slopes are subjected
to change at the time of detail design of weir. Grouting is proposed below
weir portion as
10.2 ENERGY DISSIPATION ARRANGEMENTS:
Energy Dissipation Arrangement in the form of horizontal apron with stilling
basin and end weir is proposed. The length of stilling basin is adopted as 5 x
(d2 – d1), where d2 and d1 are depth of hydraulic jumps. The arrangement
and dimensions are tentative and shall be finalized at the time of detail
masonry component design.
10.3 DIVIDE WALL TYPE JUNCTION ON LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE:
Top of divide wall on right & left side is kept at R.L. 524.50 m., i.e. at TBL.
The water side face of divide wall is kept vertical while 0.95:1 batter
(Tentative) is proposed on outer side. The dimensions are on tentative
foundation depth and shall change at the time of detailed design. A key wall
is also proposed to increase the creep length and to have good junction
with the banks. The details of key wall will be designed after finalization of
M.D.Layout. For divide walls, M-15 grade concrete is proposed.
10.4 GUIDE WALLS:
To have smooth entry and exit of flow, guide walls on u/s and on d/s side
are proposed. This guide wall will also protect the approach embankment.
The divide wall will serve the function of guide wall on upstream side
whereas D/s guide wall is proposed with top RL 516.900 m and batter of
0.6:1. For guide walls, M-15 grade concrete is proposed. The dimensions are
on the basis of assumed foundation depth and subjected to change at the
time of detailed design.
10.5 PIER:
Total 8 no’s of piers with 16.750 m. in length and 2.50 m in thickness are
proposed. The top of piers are proposed at RL 523.00 m (including pier cap).
The cut and ease water portion are proposed circular in shape on upstream
and downstream side of the pier. The pier dimensions are subjected to
change at the time of detail design.
10.6 GATES WITH HOISTING ARRANGEMENT:
Vertical lift gates 7 numbers of size 12 m x 10 m are proposed with a
provision of stop log gate groove on U/s side of service gates. Necessary
hoisting arrangements as well as pylon structure in steel shall be provided
as per the minutes issued by the Chief Engineer (WR), Water Resources
Department, Aurangabad vide letter no (Marathi) SP/Rev.Est/Part-IV/ T-5/
6943 Dated 30 October 2006.
10.7 STOP LOG GATES
Stop log / emergency gate arrangement is proposed on upstream side of
vertical lift gates. The necessity of this arrangement shall be ascertained in
relevance with tender provisions and field requirement.
10.8 APPROACH EMBANKMENT:
The top of bridge over pier is proposed at R.L. 524.500 m. Approach
embankment is proposed on both flank to have an easy approach to the
bridge. Approach to right bank is proposed with TBL of 524.500 m for a
length of 30.00 m and then with a falling gradient of 1 in 40. Whereas
approach on left side is proposed with a falling gradient of 1 in 40 towards
ground level. Protective arrangement is proposed on upstream portion of
approach embankment. Proposed Slopes of approaches are as per
minimum requirement and are subjected to change at the time of detail
design.
10.9 BRIDGE:
An R.C.C. bridge of width 6.50 m and overall depth of 1.50 m considering
hoisting arrangement is proposed over piers. The top of the bridge is
proposed at R.L. 524.500 m i.e. at T.B.L. The type of bridge shall be finalized
in relevance with tender provisions and requirement of VGGL by gate wing.
10.10 GRADES OF CONCRETE:
The grades of concrete for different components of the barrage are
proposed as under. The MAS shall confirm to IS-11155-1994
(a) Core of overflow section - M 15
(b) NOF, Guide walls, End weir, Divide wall - M 15
(c) Crest and U/S & D/s face of overflow - M 20
(d) Stilling basin, apron slab, Pier - M 20
(e) Pier cap - M 20
11.0 POINTS OF ATTENTION
1. The design and drawings for tender were not issued by Central
Designs Organization, Nashik and therefore CDO will not be
responsible for the consequences arising thereof.
2. The stage wise water planning sent vide Marathi letter
´Ö㆕ÖÃÖÓ×¾Ö†Öî /ŸÖÖÓ¿ÖÖ
(6)/(218)/2384/ÃÖÆü Dated 05/05/2016 shall got
sanctioned from Government prior to approval to this general
layout.
3. Any excess in quantity or cost due to this design/drawings in
approved tender shall be ascertained at field level and shall be got
sanctioned from competent authority i.e. Government/ Corporation
etc. before execution. CDO will not be responsible for increase in
cost due to design. Provisions of MPW manual 1984 Page No. 104,
Para 265 and instruction as per Para 3 ( ±ú ¾Ö ÃÖ) of
Government resolution dated 16.01.2015 should be followed
scrupulously.
4. Before according approval to this general layout comparative study
of proposal for administrative approval, proposal for technical
sanction and provisions in this general layout shall be analyzed and
financial implications arising thereof shall be brought to the notice
of competent authority who accords administrative approval to the
project.
5. The instructions in Marathi Government resolution no.
GOM/WRD/MWRRA-2011/(24/11)/ WR(EST)) Mantralaya, Mumbai
Dated 10.06.2013 Para 4.1 shall be followed scrupulously.
6. This design and drawing is prepared based on the data supplied by
field authority. Responsibility regarding accuracy of the data solely
lies with the field authority. CDO will not be responsible for any
mistakes in design due to inaccurate data.
7. This drawing should not be used for execution till approval from the
competent authority is obtained.
8. As per directive of Government circular dated 04/06/2014 sill level
shall be at river bed level. In this case the sill level is around 3.75 m
above river bed level and therefore approval from Government is
mandatory before commencing this work.
Certificate:-
1. The design and drawings are 100 % technically checked by concern
Executive Engineer and internally checked by other design division.
2. All original design calculations and related correspondence is
preserved in CDO, Dam circle, Design Division No. ED-2 files number
3/ (1) and 3/ (2).
12.00 CONCLUSION:
It is to mention that this layout is prepared on the basis of data supplied by
the field officers & proposal received from them. Also, this general layout is
prepared on the basis of the flood concurred by Government of
Maharashtra vide Marathi letter No. †ÖÀ¾ÖÖÃÖ®Ö -2008/
(312/2008)/³ÖÖÝÖ -5/ ´ÖÖê¯ÖÏ-2 dated 31/07/2014. The
provision of different components such as pier, EDA, guide wall, divide wall,
hoisting arrangements, apron etc. proposed are tentative and shall be
finalized at the time of detailed design by concerned masonry dam design
division, S. E. (GATES), Central Designs Organization, Nashik after necessary
approval to the general layout by competent authority in accordance with
tender conditions and financial implications. Prior approval from
Government shall be taken in accordance with guidelines provided in
Government Circular dated 04/06/2014 and Government Resolution dated
16/01/2015 and also approval to water planning informed vide Marathi
letter
´Ö㆕ÖÃÖÓ×¾Ö†Öî/ŸÖÖÓ¿ÖÖ(6)/218/2384/ÃÖÆ
Dated 05/05/2016 shall be obtained from Government. The design and
drawing for tender and estimation purpose were not issued by CDO; hence
this office will not be responsible for any change in project cost.
