female, giving her a new lease of life.

Ms. Ramdai Devi, From Lakhisarai Dist., Bihar was having pain in the upper abdomen for the past 5
months. She noticed a lump in the right abdomen, but it was neglected. After a few days due to loss
of appetite and weakness, they consulted a local doctor at Lakhisarai, where she was prescribed
medicines for pain and dyspepsia. But there was no relief and her condition started deteriorating.
Hence, they consulted Dr. Manish Bhaskar, a gastroenterologist at BIG Apollo Spectra Hospitals,
Patna.

A CT scan report revealed hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) a primary malignancy of the liver. For
further intervention, a biopsy was done and the report confirmed that the  tumor was cancerous, but
it was surgically resectable.
Dr Manish Bhaskar, Consultant Gastroenterologist at BIG Apollo Spectra Hospitals, Patna Said
“Patient was 65 year of age but she was fit, the liver was non-cirrhotic, and had not spread anywhere
else in the body, this tumor was resectable, hence an upfront surgery was the appropriate treatment for
this patient. Ms. Ramdai Devi underwent successful complex and complicated liver resection surgery,
that lasted for about 4 hrs for removal of the cancerous tumor.”
Dr Abhay Kumar, Senior Consultant General & Laparoscopic Surgeon said “The liver cancers
tumor is curable if treated in time, requires a highly technical skillset to perform such high-risk
surgery. In this patient, a liver preserving surgery was done and selective resection of segments 6 and
7 of the liver was done. Early diagnosis and surgery are the best chance for long-term survival. The
challenge lies in removing the diseased part of the life safety in such an old age group without any
complication, no loss of blood, and with an adequate margin of the liver to achieve cure. This
procedure minimized the chances of postoperative liver failure and other serious complications of
more extensive right hepatectomy”
Patient Ms. Ramdai Devi said, “We were in shock, after knowing the cancerous tumor in the liver.
But today I thank all this team of doctors and nurses at BIG Apollo Spectra Hospitals, who came as a
