The scores of the subject will be splitted as follows:

- 3 Quizzes (15 points) every 4th week.

- Attendance (5 points)
- Mid-Term exam (20 points) (On Time)
- Final exam (60 points)

 The objective of this course is to provide the

students with a practical guide and educational
framework for safety and health in construction in
order to prevent work related accidents, diseases
and harmful effects on the health of workers.
 Following will be covered in this course:
Safety and Health Objectives, Safety, Safety Engineering,
Safety Rules, Risk, Unsafe Acts, Unsafe Conditions, Job
Safety Training, Accidents, Accidents Prevention Programs,
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including (Foot,
Head, Body, Eye and Face Protection), Lineman Belt,
Safety Strap, Working Near Water, Fall Protection,
Unprotected Sides and Edges, Power Tools Safety, Hand
Tools Safety, Lifting and Back Safety, Proper Lifting
Techniques, Material Loading /Unloading Techniques,
Housekeeping, Scaffolds, Confined Spaces, Confined
Spaces Entry Procedure, Emergency Procedures
including: First Aids, Artificial Respiration, Bleeding,
Electric Shock and Burns, Eye Injuries, Heat Stroke,
Heart Attack, Fractures (Broken Bones), and Head Trauma.
SAFETY AND HEALTH OBJECTIVES:
1. To prevent accidents, diseases and harmful effects
on the health of workers arising from employment.
2. To ensure appropriate design and implementation of
construction projects.
3. To provide means of analysis from the point of view
of Safety, Health and Working conditions,
Construction Process, Activities, Technologies, etc…
Safety : Is the condition of being safe from danger, risk,
or threat of harm, injury, or loss to personnel and / or
property, whether caused accidently or deliberately.
Safety Engineers: Are those engineers who perform their
duties (developing procedures or designing systems) to
prevent people from getting SICK or INJURED and
property from damage.
Safety Engineering: Is an engineering discipline, which
assures that engineered systems provide acceptable
levels of safety.
Note: Safety engineering professionals must have
education, training, experience, and fundamental
knowledge of physics, chemistry, hazard controls, fire
protection, safety and health program management,
accident investigation and analysis, etc…
Safety Rules: Rules or style to be followed to keep all
safe from potential danger or illness and to keep your
surroundings safe, clean and healthy.
General Safety Rules may include (not ltd. to) the following:
1. Always use proper lifting techniques:
 Bend the knees, not the back.
 Use of mechanical lifting devices to move heavy
objects (wherever possible).
 Avoid manual lifting of materials, articles or objects
which are too heavy ( ≥ 70 pounds ask for help).
2. Immediately wipe out any greasy spills and put a
Wet Floor Sign.

Wet Floor Signs: Are signs used to warn people from

wet floors to avoid slipping or falling.

3. Before (or after) using,

clean any equipment been in
contact with any hazardous
or toxic material.
4) Always use ladders (not chairs or stools), in its
intended way.

5) Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) must be
worn when performing
specific duties that
require its use to ensure
worker’s safety.
6) Always report if any equipment needs to be
repaired which otherwise could cause an accident.
7) All warning signs, signals and alarms shall be
obeyed (ALWAYS).
8) Firefighting equipment shall be maintained
according to manufacturer's instructions.
9)Keep Stairways, Hallways, and Doorways clear
and clean to prevent fire hazards, and keep the work
area clean, safe, efficient and pleasant.
10) Safety Protocols to be discussed during any
research project with all employees (on a weekly or
monthly basis).
Risk: Is a probability of threat for damage, injury,
loss, or any negative occurrence that may be caused
by either external or internal vulnerabilities which,
may be avoided through preemptive action.

Or it…
Is the possibility that something bad or unpleasant
(such as an injury or a loss) will happen.
