loading of minerals,” says the Steel Prize
jury. “With its nearly doubled unloading
rate, the Helix system is superior to all
conventional solutions.” •

ITALIAN manufacturer JMG Cranes has
been making electric pick and carry
cranes with a focus on safety, perfor-
mance, ease of use, durability and low
operating costs since 2007. In 2016, re-
acting to market demand for a stronger,
more energy-efficient, portable crane,
JMG Cranes set out to create a best-in-
class electric crane.
Historically, pick and carry cranes
have been both crucial to industry and
disappointingly limited. They’re heavy,
hard to transport and have trouble
with large loads. “The market wanted a
new crane with the same dimensions,
but with bigger capacity and a low
deadweight. It would need to be able to
lift big loads, but also be light enough
to move from site to site via truck,” says

vision, the mild steel typically used for
the boom, rear frame and outriggers
would have to be replaced with high-

TRUCKING is one of the most strictly
monitored industries in terms of safety
— which can pose challenges when it
comes to innovation. But using SSAB’s
high-strength steel, Wabash National,
the biggest manufacturer of highway
truck trailers in the U.S., launched an
updated rear impact guard (RIG) for
truck trailers.
The company also became interna-
tionally recognized for its new design by
earning a Swedish Steel Prize nomina-
tion.
In the U.S. and Canada, highway
trucks weighing 4.5 tons or more are
required by law to have a RIG, which ex-
tends below the rear bumper of a truck
trailer to prevent smaller vehicles from
slipping under the truck upon impact.
Three years ago, Wabash National
invested considerable resources to focus
on enhancing RIG performance. The
challenges were formidable. “We could
not add significant weight or costs, nor
make the trailer impractical in any way,”
explaines Andrzej Wylezinski, Manager
of Structural Engineering at Wabash.
The idea for the new RIG design was
to use four vertical posts instead of
two, and a longer, reinforced bumper

3 mm and 2 mm thicknesses to create
the RIG-16 Rear Underride Guard

In the future, users of SSAB’s products will be able to access relevant data
about their steel via an ID that links directly to the cloud. This concept is
being developed as part of a project known as SSAB SmartSteel.

THE IDEA BEHIND the SSAB Smart-
Steel project is to create a digital
platform based on cloud-based data,
enabling the various stakeholders in the
value chain to access information on the
properties and characteristics of SSAB’s
steel. This would allow each link in the
chain – from SSAB to the manufacturer
and the end user, and even users of
future recycled products – to access and
utilize valuable information.
Niko Korte, SSAB’s Head of Digital
Business Development, is managing the
SmartSteel project. He says the infor-
mation that accumulates in the cloud
over the course of the entire produc-
tion chain will eventually be utilized to
create new services, while accelerating
and improving the efficiency of product
development at every stage. In addition,
the accumulated information would al-
low end users and other stakeholders to
ensure the quality, safety and durability
of the product.
“By using and adding to the data, any
user of the product will have access to
every piece of information they might
need, allowing them to make optimal use
of the steel and save time in the work-
shop,” says Korte.

part of the digital manufacturing trend
known as Industry 4.0. The Internet
of Materials is the next step after the
Internet of Things, moving beyond
communication between components
and machines, to a future in which even
materials share information.
“SmartSteel creates a so-called
platform economy, where everyone con-
tributes information, forming a kind of
ecosystem around the product,” she says.
It’s not only the material manufactur-
ers like SSAB that stand to gain from
SmartSteel. Vinnova, Sweden’s innova-
tion agency, has already pledged SEK 10
million of funding to SmartSteel. SSAB
is also collaborating with companies

that Sandvik Materials Technology
intends to play a key part in help-
ing to improve the efficiency of its
customers, through data capture and
utilization, as well as by creating value

“Our aim is to find a way to add
a unique product identifier to our
advanced materials for even the most
demanding industries. T he vision is for
product identification to become an
intrinsic part of the product, with the
ability to withstand both thermal and
mechanical processing throughout
the entire product life cycle,” Klockars
says. •

Industry 4.0 is the current trend in
manufacturing, defined by increased
automation and data exchange. Key
features of Industry 4.0 include the
Internet of Things (IoT), cyber-phys-
ical systems and cloud computing.
Industry 4.0 creates what is known as
a “smart factory,” consisting of cyber-
physical systems that communicate
and cooperate with each other and
with humans in real time, using IoT.

FOUNDED IN 1883, Alfa Laval has more
than 2,500 patents to its name. One of
its key products is the heat exchanger
– a piece of equipment that is used to
transfer heat across a wide variety of
applications.
Alfa Laval’s gasketed plate-and-
frame heat exchangers provide efficient
heat transfer in compact equipment with
minimal environmental impact. For many
years, Alfa Laval has been manufactur-
ing these heat exchangers using prefab-
ricated pressure plates from SSAB.
In addition to producing the actual

a wear plate that could withstand tough conditions and was easy to
bend, weld and machine. With Hardox 400, the company now can

KFK Plc is a company in Varna, Bulgaria,
that manufactures parts for compact-
ing and excavation machinery, as well
as custom industrial equipment. Three
years ago, KFK was having difficulty pro-
ducing bottom plates for road compac-
tors, which are used to compress gravel
before asphalt is laid on roads.
The problem was the quality of steel
plates the company was using, which
were difficult to drill, bend and machine.
This resulted in cracked drills and slower
production times. KFK also needed
plates that had high strength and wear
resistance, due to their contact with
gravel.
IMPROVING BENDABILITY
KFK contacted SSAB and began testing
Hardox 400, an abrasion-resistant steel
with a nominal hardness of 400 HBW. The
company was so pleased with the wear
plate’s performance that it began using
Hardox 400 for all of its bottom plates,
and now orders custom sizes from SSAB.
“KFK uses Hardox 400 to produce
parts for construction equipment
that requires high strength and wear
resistance,” says Veselina Baramova,
Manager, Purchasing and Logistics,
KFK Plc. “Hardox has good bendability,
so when we bend it with our hydraulic
press brakes, we do not need to take
additional corrective measures that we
usually do with other materials.”
REDUCING MACHINING TIME BY
30 PERCENT
“When using Hardox with the right tools
and mode of operation, we can shorten
the machining time by up to 30 percent
compared to the same conditions for
other material grades,” says Baramova.
“Hardox also does not require special
welding technology or material prepa-
ration, which makes our production
more efficient.” Baramova says that
another advantage with Hardox 400 is
that its protective coating allows long-
term outdoor storage with no corrosion.
