2. (a) Derive the expression for emf induced in a DC Generator. [10]

(b) A 6 pole lap wound DC generator has 720 active conductors. The generator is
designed to generate 420V at 1720 RPM. Determine the flux per pole. If this
generator is wave wound, at what speed it must be rotated to generate a voltage
of 630 V.

3. What is the necessity of a Starter in a DC Motor? With the help of a near sketch [10]
explain the working of a Three Point Starter.

4. (a) Explain the process to determine the efficiency of a DC Series Motor and [10]
Generator by conducting Fields Test.
(b) A DC shunt motor gave the following results of Swinburne’s Test:
Voltage 600V, current 8A

Ra = 0.1Ω, Rsh = 300Ω
Find the efficiency of the machine, (i) As a generator delivering 100A at 600V

(ii) As a motor having a line current of 100A at 600V. Assume stray losses as 1%
of output.

5. (a) Explain the principle of working of a Transformer and obtain the expression for [6]
the EMF induced in the winding.
(b) A single phase transformer has 400 primary turns and 1000 secondary turns. [4]
The net cross sectional area of the core is 60 cm 2. If the primary is connected to
a 50Hz supply at 520V, calculate (i) the peak value of the flux density in the
core, (ii) the voltage induced in the secondary of the transformer.
6. Explain the principle of operation of an Autotransformer. What are the advantages [10]
of the auto transformer with respect to a two Winding Transformer? Obtain the
relation for savings in copper in an Autotransformer.
7. (a) Explain the procedure to control the speed of a DC Motor below its rated speed [10]
(b) A 240V DC Shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.25Ώ and runs at 1000
RPM, taking an armature current of 40A. It is desired to reduce the speed to 800
RPM. (i) if the armature current remains the same, find the additional resistance
required to connected in series with the armature circuits, (ii) if, with the above
additional resistance in the circuit, armature current reduces to 20A, find the
speed at which the motor will operate.

8. A 5 KVA, 200/1000V, 50Hz, single phase transformer gave the following test [10]
results OC Test (LV Side) : 200V, 1.2A, 90W. SC Test (HV Side) : 50V, 5A,
110W.
(i) Calculate the equivalent circuit parameters referred to the LV Side
(ii) Calculate the output secondary voltage when delivering 3KW at 0.8 pf
lagging, the input primary voltage being 200V. Find the percentage
voltage regulation.
