PART – A

1). a A 6 pole, lap wound armature has 840 conductors with a flux per pole of 0.018Wb. [2]
The generator is run at 1200 RPM. Calculate the EMF generated.
b Draw the connection diagram for various types of DC Compound Generators and [2]
write their terminal voltage equations.
c What is the function of a Commutator in a DC Motor? [2]
d Explain the Flemings rule with respect to DC Motors. [2]
e List out the conditions for conducting Hopkinsons Test on a DC Shunt Machines. [2]
f What are the advantages of Brake Test for determining the efficiency? [2]
g Define Transformation Ratio and give the expression for Transformation Ratio. [2]
h What are the methods of reducing magnetic losses in a Transformer? [2]
i What are the conditions for parallel operation of two Transformers? [2]
j What is the condition for maximum efficiency in a Transformer? [2]

2.a What is Armature Reaction? Derive the necessary relations. [7]

b A 250V, 25kW, 4 pole DC generator has 328 wave connected armature conductors. [3]
When the machine is delivering full load, the brushes are given a lead of 7.2 o
(Electrical). Calculate the cross magnetizing ampere turns per pole.

3. Draw the developed lap winding of a 2 layer lap winding for a 4 pole generator with [10]
16 Coils.

4.a Derive the expression for the torque developed in an armature of a DC Motor. [5]
b A 4 pole lap connected Dc Motor has 576 conductors and draws an armature current [5]
of 1A. if the flux per pole is 0.02Wb. Calculate the armature torque developed.

5.a Explain the process of determining the efficiency of DC Shunt machines by [5]
regeneration method.
b The readings obtained in a Back to Back test on DC shunt machines is as follows : [5]
Line voltage : 100V, motor current 30A, generator current 25A, armature resistance
of each machine 0.25Ω. Calculate the efficiency of the machines, ignore the field
currents and assuming the iron and mechanical losses are the same.

6.a Explain the construction and working of Single Phase Transformer and derive the [6]
equation for the EMF induced in the windings.
b A 100kVA, 11000V/440V, 50Hz single phase transformer has 40 secondary turns. [4]
Calculate the number of primary turns and the primary and secondary currents.

7. A 20kVA, 2500 / 250V, 50Hz, 1 Phase transformer has the following test results : [10]
OC Test : 250V, 1.4A, 105W; SC Test : 104V, 8A, 320W
Compute the approximate equivalent circuit parameters referred to the low voltage
side and draw the circuit.

8.a Explain the method of determining the efficiency of a transformer by back to back [5]
test.
b Two similar 250kVA single phase transformers gave the following test results when [5]
tested by a back to back method: Mains wattmeter W 1 = 5.0kW, Primary series
circuit wattmeter W2 = 7.5kW at full load. Find out the individual transformer
efficiencies at 75% full load and 0.8 p.f. lead.
