interested in the salary of a particular job while a person working in the
engineering field as an engineer typically earns around 317,000 ZAR per year.
Salaries range from 100,000 ZAR (Lowest average) to 667,000 ZAR (highest
average, actual maximum salary is higher).

average salary) to 7,260,000 NGN per year (maximum average salary, actual
maximum is higher).
Median Salary
The median salary is 3,240,000 NGN per year, which means that half (50%) of
people working in Engineering are earning less than 3,240,000 NGN while the

middle salary value. Generally speaking, you would want to be on the right side of
the graph with the group earning more than the median salary.
Percentiles
Closely related to the median are two values: the 25th and the 75th percentiles.
Reading from the salary distribution diagram, 25% of people working in
Engineering are earning less than 1,950,000 NGN while 75% of them are earning
more than 1,950,000 NGN. Also from the diagram, 75% of people working in
Engineering are earning less than 4,940,000 NGN while 25% are earning more
than 4,940,000 NGN.
Various Engineering Career in Nigeria includes:
Aeronautic Engineers
Petroleum Engineers
Telecommunication Engineers
Production Engineers
Network Engineers
Civil Engineers
Mechanical Engineers
1.) Aeronautic Engineers
Aeronautic engineers are paid generously due to the fact that their job is very
delicate, technically-demanding and requires being careful. Should in case they
make any mistake at the design, building, or assembling stage, millions of lives
would be exposed to serious risks while flying the plane on air.
It will interest you to know that Petroleum engineers are not limited to the oil and
gas sector as there are some of them who work with other relevant engineering
fields like civil and the likes.
Salaries of petroleum engineers depend largely on many factors, including the
company’s revenue, years of experience, current rank or level, and time on the
job. The average salary of a petroleum engineer in Nigeria is around N1million
monthly and N12million annually.
That being said, here’s a rough estimate of salaries some top companies pay their
petroleum engineers:
i. Shell Nigeria: Shell is the largest, old-serving, and one of the highest paying oil
companies in Nigeria. The renowned oil company boasts of more than 6000
employees [with 85% of its staff members being Nigerians] and provides about
21% of our daily supply of petroleum. Shell pays between N150,000 to N500,000
to its entry level staffs, N600,000 to N1,000,000 to Experienced Petroleum
Engineers, as well as N2,000,000 to N3,000,000 to the plant managers.
ii. Total E&P: This is yet another top-ranked oil and gas company in Nigeria. Staffs
working with Total E&P earn between N7, 000, 000 – N12, 000, 000 annually,
depending on the rank/position, job specification, location, and some other basic
factors.
iii. Schlumberger Nigeria: this Lagos-headquartered popular oil and gas firm pays
between N250,000 to N350,000 monthly to her Entry Level staffs while the
Experienced Petroleum Engineers and Plant managers earn N400,000 to
N500,000 and N600,000 to N1,000,000 respectively, depending on certain factors.
iv. Exxon-Mobil Nigeria: This is one of the top 3 biggest oil companies in Nigeria.
Exxon-Mobil offers a flexible job description for aspiring petroleum engineers and
remunerates them handsomely. The company pays entry level petroleum
engineers between N200,000 to N400,000 monthly while those with considerable
years of experience earn N400,000 to N600,000 in a month.
v. Total: The French company is one of the biggest oil companies in the world and
also among the highest paying oil companies in Nigeria. As an entry level
petroleum engineer in this oil company, you will earn between N200,000 –
N500,000 on a monthly basis, while your salary would be between N500,000 –
800,000 as an experienced engineer.
See the amount paid by other oil companies to entry level petroleum engineers
below:
The oil and gas industry in Nigeria is a multibillion-dollar industry, and virtually all
the employees therein are well remunerated, including the petroleum engineers.
Another thing is that these engineers undergo series of rigorous activities while
carrying out their duties, and they are exposed to a lot of hazards –all of which
justifies why they are being paid heavily.
They work earnestly to ensure that the production process of the firm is done
with utmost smoothness, hitch-free, and at the barest minimum cost. One thing
about production engineers is that they can work in myriads of manufacturing set
ups, including airline, clothing, car, and food companies – be it private or public.
That being said, the salaries paid to most Entry-Level production engineers is
around #60,000 per month while those with wealth of experience and longer
years in service earn as much as #350,000 to #500,000 in a month.
Network Engineers are the one who design, establish, maintain, and support
telecommunication and computer networks within an organization or between
multiple organizations.
At times, they might also be saddled with the responsibility of upholding security,
handling data storage and devising means of retrieving data should in case
sudden breaches or data loss occur. As a Network engineer, you can work either
as an externally outsourced IT networking consultant or better still be recruited as
one of the company’s internal IT support team.
The plain truth is that network engineering is among the most challenging and
technically-demanding jobs in ICT, especially when considering the fact that the
life of a firm depends largely on its computer networks. This is why organizations
always pay engineers in charge of their networks heavily and commeasurably to
ensure adequate functioning of their system.
They also oversee the planning, designing, and construction of housing projects
like schools, hospitals, personal houses, airports, to mention but a few. Regardless
of the kind of project given to them, civil engineers monitor every stages of the
project to ensure that the finished work is ideal and safe for human use.
Having said that, it is equally important to reveal to you that civil engineering has
many branches, and these includes Material science, Geotechnical engineering,
Coastal engineering, Structural engineering, Environmental engineering, among
others.
Your year of experience is among the major factor that determines your take
home as a civil engineer, and also when you are working with a firm that
undertakes little projects you tend to earn lesser amount compared to people in
big companies that handle bigger projects like bridges, roads, railroads, etc.
Another factor that may influence your salary as a civil engineer is the nature of
the company that hired you; some sectors pay higher/lesser than the other. For
instance, entry-level civil engineers in leading oil and gas firms earn as high as
N120,000 – N250,000 monthly while most other sectors pay lesser amounts.
As earlier said, civil engineering has many branches, but structural and
construction engineering are the highest paying branches for now, which means
your salary may be higher than engineers in other branches.
All things being equal, here is a quick breakdown of civil engineers salaries in
Nigeria [based on rank]:
They are also the innovators of most of the machinery we use daily in our
personal homes and offices. As a mechanical engineer, you can work in myriads of
sectors, including the automobile, oil and gas, and aviation industries. That being
said, it will please you to know that mechanical engineers also belong to the
category of highest paid engineers.
