Problem Set 5
Due: Tuesday, October 20, at the start of class (1:30 pm).
Objectives: At the end of this assignment, you should be able to determine:
 Usual point estimators for the mean and standard deviation of any distribution, as well
as p of a binomial distribution.
 The three different kinds of estimators
 Estimator standard error and bias.
 Point estimates of functions of random variables.
 How to interpret a confidence interval, upper bound or lower bound.
 Interval, upper-bound, and lower-bound estimates for the mean of any RV, the
variance of a normal RV, and p of a binomial distribution, under certain sets of
circumstances.
Reading: Sections 6.1, 7.1, through 7.4 of the text. Skip the discussion of bootstrap
estimators starting on p. 260. Also, skim section 6.2, but pay attention to the invariance
principle on page 270.
Self-checked exercises: These text exercises relate to the objectives and have
answers in the back of the book.
Ch. 6, exercises 1, 3, and 7. Ch 7, exercises 1, 3, 11, 13, 19, 21, 29, 35, and 37
Remember, when you do practice problems, your objective is to know how to solve that
kind of problem, rather than finding the answer to that specific problem.
Assigned Problems: Each is worth a maximum of four points.
1. Devore Ch 6, problem 2.
2. Devore Ch 6, problem 8. When answering the questions in the exercise, be sure to
answer these questions, too:
 Let Y = the number of components in a random sample of size n that are not
defective. What is the distribution of Y?
 d) The mathematical expression that determines P(system works) as a function
of p. Here, “p” is a probability, not the estimate from Part a.

 e) What needs to be true about the distribution of ^p from Part a)? Hint: The
answer is in the assigned part in Section 6.2.
3. Devore Ch 7, problem 4
4. Devore Ch 7, problem 12
5. Devore Ch 7, problem 34.

a)

There is 95% confidence that the true mean proportional limit stress of all such
joints is higher than 8.11 MPa.
b)

We are 95% confident that the next new observation for proportional limit stress of
a single joint is higher than 7.03 MPa.
