FIELD REPORT GUIDELINE

Introduction
Teaching practice is a period of immersion whereby student teachers are given the opportunities to
apply and integrate theoretical knowledge acquired from the University to the realities of the
classroom situation. At the end of teaching practice, Mzumbe University enquires the student-
teacher to write a report. The field report describes what happened in the field. The teaching
practice field report will serve as an information guide presenting the field experiences, problems
encountered, and challenges faced by student- teachers. The purpose of this guide is to provide
direction on how to develop, organise and write a teaching practice field report in teacher education
programmes of Mzumbe University. Teaching practice field report refers to a set of assignment in
teacher education that necessitates the student-teacher to combine theory and analysis with
observation and practice.

Like any other field report, teaching practice report requires student-teacher apply theoretical
knowledge learned in the classroom with methods of observation and practice applied outside of
the classroom. Student-teacher is required to describe an observed place, activity or event and then
analyse that observation data.

The teaching practice field report process involves formulating, improving and expanding
educational, managerial or service-oriented work. The data is often in the form of notes taken
during the observation as well as other forms of data gathering.

It is an official account of teaching practice that has been compiled and communicated by the field
student-teacher. For example, a field report about a practice teaching session, a field report about
a court session observed, a filed report about the developmental stage of a child who has been
tested, a field report about a work experience placement that forms part of a university course.
Although the subject matter of all these kind of field reports will vary considerably, there are
similarities in them as they require both descriptions of an observed place or event and analysis of
what was observed.
