Coming to the New World
Beginning in the 1840s American ports saw an increase in emigrants from Luxembourg.
This increase was not seen by examing passenger lists of ships entering ports as Luxembourgers
were often listed generically as Germans, and to a lesser extent, as natives from Belgium,
Holland, France, and Prussia. None of the ancestors listed herein were noted as Luxembourgers
on their ship’s rosters. It may have been that our ancestors felt compelled to cite countries other
than their native home out of concern, for in the previous century laws prohibited emigration.
Violation of such laws would result in the government or its agents seizing land owned by the
emigrant or his family. Perhaps those who completed the passenger lists were less than diligent
and accurate when citing passengers and their nativity. Fortunately for those who chose or were
compelled to emigrate to America from Luxembourg there were two major ports from which to
embark that were fairly close: Le Havre, France and Antwerp. Other ports that could have been
used were Rotterdam and Bremen.
For perhaps financial reason, the Hingtgen family did not emigrate to America together,
but rather over a period of three and one half years. In fact, it is possible that Magdalena, the
eldest child of Peter and Susanna (Simon) Hingtgen, married and remained in Luxembourg. A
marriage or death record for her has not yet been found in Luxembourg or Dubuque or Jackson
Counties, Iowa.
Jaques Henschen (Jacob Hingtgen) was born in Hostert, Luxembourg. He was married
February 10, 1847 to Anna Streff. Jacob, farmer, aged 31, Anna, aged 25 and two children, Peter,
aged 4, and Theodore, aged 11 months (the latter listed separately with infants) arrived in New
York City, October 14, 1851 on the ship “Lancashire,” from Le Havre. Also on board were Anna
(Streff) Hingtgen’s younger siblings, Maria, Peter, John and Catharine “Strief,” natives of
Neuhaeusgen, Luxembourg (all of whom settled in Jackson County, Ia.). They were listed as
natives of Belgium.
Theordore Hintgen (Hingtgen) carpenter, aged 26, embarked from Antwerp on the ship
“Elizabeth Denison,” arriving in New York City, November 7, 1854. All the passenger were
listed as natives of Germany. About three years later he married Margaret Heiter.
The final ship carring the Hingtgens to America was the “Connecticut,” from Le Havre,
arriving in New York City, May 23, 1855. Peter, aged 59, Anna, aged 22, and Bernhard
(Bernard,) aged 25, Hentgen (Hingtgen) are listed as natives of Belgium. Peter’s wife, Susanna,
must have been deceased by this time.
Anna Hentgen (Hingtgen) born in Hostert, Luxembourg married Mathias Even on
September 14, 1855 in St. Donatus, Ia. Mathias Even was born in Alt Trier, Luxembourg. He
emigrated to America in 1849 with his parents. They moved to St. Donatus, Ia. In 1852. Anna
and Mathias settled on a farm in Prairie Spring township, Jackson County, about 4 miles east of
LaMotte, Ia. They were parents of 12 children.
Bernhard Hentgen (Bernard Hingtgen) born in Hostert, Luxembourg, settled on a farm
near his brothers, Theodore and Jacob in Jackson County. In 1858 he married Anna Reisdorffer
who is buried in Spruce Creek. They had 4 children. About 1870, he married Katherine Theisen.
They had seven children.

Theodore and Margaret (Heiter) Hingtgen
On May 11, 1857, Theodore Hingtgen, aged 26 and Margaret Heiter, aged 18 were united
in marriage at St. Donatus Catholic Church, St. Donatus, Iowa by Rev. Henry Feldeman. They
settled in Prairie Springs, Jackson County, Iowa. To this union, 13 children were born.
Theodore died suddenly of a heart disease. His obituary reads: “He was down town in the
morning greeting his friends in the usual cherry manner and seemed to be feeling better than he
had for some time past. He returned home about noon and after dinner went to his bedroom for a
short rest. Later in the afternoon, his wife and daughter went to see why he didn’t get up and
found that he was suffering from pains around the heart. A physician was called but it was
impossible to render him and assistance.
Margaret died about 10 years later of appoxy (stroke) at her home on Fourth Street,
Bellevue, Ia.

Michael and Johanna (Hoffmann) Hingtgen
After Mike and Johanna were married, they took over the family farm, and Mike went
thrashing. His thrashing days began in 1872 when he was 13 years old and went along with his
dad to trash. Then they thrashed by horsepower. In the later years, to the 1920s they thrashed
with steam engine power. Gas tractors were used in the last 1920s until 1950.
On February 22, 1920, their daughter Susan Deppe passed away of a flu epidemic, so
they raised their 11 months old grandson, Cletus Deppe.
In 1933, Mike has the misfortune to lose his hand in the corn shredder. He was still able
to do a few tasks around the house. Mike suffered a stroke at home on June 10, 1935 and passed
away the next day.
