This enjoyable
listening activity can
be used to teach
adjectives and their
opposites. Students complete bingo cards with a selection of
specified adjectives. The teacher calls out adjectives one by one. If a
student has the opposite of the adjective on their bingo card, they
cross the word off. The winner is the student who gets three opposite
adjectives in a row, either vertically, horizontally or diagonally. You
can also play with the winner having all nine squares crossed off. As
soon as a student has a winning sequence, he or she shouts out

Adjective Match
ESL EFL Writing Activity Elementary 20 Minutes
You can use this writing activity to teach your students how to
describe nouns. The class is divided into teams of four. The teacher
then writes a noun on the board. Each student writes as many
adjectives that describe the noun as he/she can think of in five
minutes. After five minutes, the team members compare their
answers. Each team receives one point for each adjective that
matches one of their team member’s adjectives, e.g. If the noun was
'cloud' and two students in the team wrote 'fluffy', the team would get
two points. The team with the most points at the end of the game
wins.

Here is a fun matching game for elementary students to practice
adjectivenoun combinations. The class is split into pairs. Each pair is
then given a set of dominoes. Students take it in turns to put down
their dominoes at either end of the domino chain. Each time a
student puts down a domino, it must make an adjectivenoun
combination. If a student thinks the adjective and noun combination
does not match, he or she can challenge the other student. The first
student to get rid of all their dominoes is the winner.

divided into groups of four and each student is given a copy of the

point. For an extra point, the group uses the opposite adjective in a
sentence. All the students then write down the adjective on their
worksheet. The group with the most points at the end is the winner.
After the game has been completed, the students write ten sentences
using two adjectives from the worksheet in a each sentence. The
students then work in pairs. The students exchange their sentences
with their partner and change the adjectives in the sentences to their

Alanis Morissette and try to complete 17 missing adjectives. After
they have listened to the song two times, the students discuss and
compare their answers with their teammates. Teams then take it in

for each correct adjective and an extra point for spelling. After all the
adjectives have been written on the board and the winning team has

Adjective Opinions
ESL EFL Speaking Activity Intermediate 35 Minutes
In this speaking activity, students practice using adjectives with ed
and ing endings. Students use the different adjective forms to
express opinions and feelings about various things. The class is
divided into pairs (A and B) and each student is given the
corresponding part of the worksheet. The students complete
sentences with true information about themselves. There are 10
sentences in total. The sentences use an adjective with an ed
ending followed by an adjective ending ing. When they have
finished, the students take it in turns to read and tell their partner
about each sentence. Students try to explain their answers and keep
the conversation going by asking questions. After that, the students
test each other. They exchange worksheets and read their partner’s
completed sentences, but instead of saying the adjective, they use
the word 'blank'. Their partner then says the complete sentence,
including the adjective.

Compound Adjective
Catchphrase
ESL EFL Speaking Activity Intermediate 20 Minutes
In this fun teaching activity, students get their team to guess
compound adjectives by explaining the word to them. The class is
divided into two teams. One player from each team comes to the
front of the class. Each player is given a compound adjective card
along with related vocabulary. The players have to get their team to
guess the compound adjective by using similar vocabulary to what’s
on the card. They do this by using words and physical gestures to
give clues to their team. When a team guesses the compound
adjective from the clues, they score a point. Then, another student
from the team comes up to give clues for another compound
adjective. The object of the game is to be the first team to get seven
points.
