PAT TAHUN 2020 ENGLISH FORM ONE 12/1

Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit each
gap (35 – 40).
There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.

‘Laugh and the world laughs with you’, the adage goes. Humour encompasses any
human communication which makes people laugh or feel happy.
Who doesn’t enjoy a great laugh whenever possible? For example, it
strengthens our immune system and it releases beneficial hormones that refresh and revitalise
us. Futhermore, laughter can calm our nerves, reduce tensionand stimulates creativity.
Laughter and the happiness it brings actually can be contagious. As
researchers have started to look more closely at humour and its effects, they have discovered
that genuine laughter lights up multiple areas of the brain. As a joke unfolds, the frontal lobe
jumps into action to process the information.
Laughtercan also trigger th brain’s emotional reward center, delivering a heaping dose
of feel-good dopamine and mood-lifting serotonin. It can even increase the release of
endorphins, the pain-relieving chemicals our brain release in response to things such as
exercise and food.
Apart from the significant medical benefits of laughter, all of us enjoy having a good
laugh and we enjoy being around people who make us laugh. Because they are able
to see the lighter side of a difficulty, they are better able to put it in perspective.

A Laughter is a great healer and one of the most positive human emotions.
B The result can be anything from a mild chuckle to an all-out-from-the-tummy laugh.
C The frontal lobe serves as a gatekeeper of sorts and determines if we are going to ‘get’ the
joke or not
D It is the ability or quality of people, objects or situations to summon feelings of
amusement in other people.
E From there, we learn what to laugh at based on our experiences, attitudes and friendships.
F This is because of mirror neurons that fire when we observe other people doing a certain
action.
G People who can laugh at themselves or at their situation are usually stronger when
problems arise.
H That is probably where the idiom of ‘Laughter is the best medicine’ comes from.
