Dear Parents,

Snack Provision

As you will know, we provide daily snacks at pre-school. In line with the Early Years Foundation Stage these
are nutritious and promote healthy eating. We also ensure that fresh drinking water is available at all times,
in addition to the drink that you provide for your child.

These snacks are provided at an extra cost to the pre-school, with some donations from parents to support
this.

Snacks are popular during the morning session, and if a child is reluctant to have a snack, they are encouraged
to do so. Children are especially encouraged to have a drink, whether they choose to have a snack or not.
However, during the afternoon sessions snack time is not as popular. Many children choose not to stop
playing to eat again having only just finished their lunch at 1230pm.

Recently we have seen a decline in the amount of donations we have received to support buying snacks and
this has come at a time when expenditure has increased for cleaning products, disinfectants and hand
sanitizers due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As so few children are accessing snacks in the afternoon, and
coupled with the fact that we have been supported by very few donations (however, many thanks to the few
parents who have supported us with snack costs) it has been decided to offer snacks during the morning
sessions only from after the October half term holiday.

By stopping the snacks being offered in the afternoon, we will also be making an additional practitioner
available to run an activity with the children or support them in their free play. We believe that this is a better
use of staff time and expertise, given the very small uptake for the afternoon snack.

Please be assured that fresh drinking water will always be available, in addition to each child’s own drink and
that if a child does ask for or need to eat something additional to their lunch, there will always be bread
available, or a small amount of fruit or vegetables.

Can I please take this opportunity to remind you respectfully that children’s bottles should contain water. If
your child has squash in their bottle can we ask that you dilute it as much as possible. We promote water as a
healthy option rather than squash, and to support the fact that water is the only option once your child
reaches school.

We thank you for your understanding,

Estelle
