B. LET’S LEARN.
Read the passage three times.
In 1935, he started school. But he couldn´t go to school with his white friends. Martin had to go to a school of
black children. He was told his white friends could not play with him anymore.
By the time Martin was 15, he had finished high school and was starting college. He earned his first college
degree in 1948. Martin earned his second college degree in 1951. Then he moved to Boston to earn a Ph D. it was
in Boston that Martin met Coretta Scott. Martin and Coretta were married in 1953.
In 1954, they moved to Montgomery, Alabama. Martin became a pastor there. He helped lead the Montgomery
Bus Boycott after Rosa Marks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white man in 1955. Black people
were protesting a law that said they had to ride at the backs of the buses. Black people refused to ride the public
buses until the law was changed. In 1956, the law was changed. Martin became well known for helping southern
black people.
In 1957, Martin and a group of pastors founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. They worked
together to help black people stand up for their rights. Martin met with President John F. Kennedy in 1962 to talk
about the civil rights.
In 1965, Martin helped organize the March on Washington D.C. this was a peaceful gathering of around 250.000
people who wanted equality and justice for African Americans. Martin gave his famous speech “I Have a Dream”
on August 28, 1963, which talked about his hope that one day America would be a place where all people would
be treated fairly.
The next year, in 1964, the Civil Rights Act was passed, which made it against the law to treat people differently
because of their race, color, gender or religion. Martin Luther King Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. No
one as young as Martin had ever won the award before.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a hero to many people, but not everyone was happy about the changes in the country.
Sadly, on April 4, 1968, Martin was shot and killed while standing on a hotel balcony. Today, people honor his
life and the way he helped make America a better place by celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day each January.
