PROPOSAL TOPICS 2020

The storm water drains and sewer lines are separate in the study
area. Entire town drains the storm water into the Bay of Bengal
mainly through two major rivers namely Cooum and Adyar
Rivers. The entire city is divided into 12 watersheds based on
the natural boundaries like rivers, channels, drains, roads,
railway lines and contours (Figure 1). the sub basins of Chennai
Corporation with their geographical areas (Detailed Project
Report, 2009).

– II Otteri Nullah (30.63 sq.km) Sub basin

Otteri Nulla is another small stream flowing in the northern part
of Chennai. This is an east-west waterway which runs through

north Chennai, starting at the village of Mullam proceeding


through Purasawalkam and then passing through Carnatic Mills
and Buckingham before meeting the Buckingham Canal at
Basin Bridge
1. Along with the other major waterways of Chennai, the water
remains heavily polluted in spite of many government efforts
to clean it up over the years, including the relocation of many
thousands of people from its banks since the year 2000.

Otteri Nullah sub basin


Otteri Nullah sub basin is located on the Northern part of
Chennai city. It is surrounded by Kolattur sub basin
(I) on western part, Cooum sub basin(VI) in southern part,
(II) North Buckingham canal sub basin (IV) on eastern side,
Captain Cotton canal sub basin
(III) on the Northern side and Otteri Nullah has a catchment area
of 30.63 sq.kms.
(IV) The total length of Otteri Nullah is 10.7 kms.
(V) This sub basin covers Perembur, Konnur, Villivakkam,
Ayanavaram, Purasavakkam, Kilpauk North, Mogapper, part of
Kolattur, a part of Anna Nagar, Pulianthope and a part of
Thattankulam.
(VI) Micro closed drains like Anti Malarial Drain, Bricklin
Road Drain, Sivagami street Drain, Konnur High Road Drain,
3rd Main Road Drain and Millers Road Drain join Otteri Nullah
at different locations in addition to some road side drains that
join directly Otteri Nullah.
(VII) A microclosed Sivagami street drain joins micro open
Ekangipuram channel and then finally drains into major Otteri
Nullah.
(VIII) The Otteri Nullah sub basin contain 8.57 Sq.km of
Commercial and Industrial, 19.45 Sq.km of Residential with
high density, 0.18 Sq.km of Residential with low density and
2.43 Sq.km

RIVER WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT

ISSUES :
Water in the city is needed for various key reasons.
The most significant river have been abused and plague by
environmental issues, landfill,and leading to contamination of
soil and water. Major its creates a various diseases and affecting
a humans life .
PROPOSAL :
The design examines the case of the otteri nalla in
purasaivakkam.over bridge which connects to parks
The waterfront forms the connectivity of herbal parks which is
in lack of access and exhibits the characters and create a
recreational hub along the waterfront.
PEDESTRIAL WAY WHICH CONNECTS TO HERBAL
PARK TO MILLERS ROAD.
JUSTIFICATION :
TO activate a river as multifunctional activity .main thing the
city developmentand bringing back city as a citys flood carrier.
