UNIT 2 – AIR AND WEATHER

1. THE ATMOSPHERE
a. Atmosphere: mass of gases that surrounds the Earth (masa de gases
que rodean la Tierra)
b. Earth’s atmosphere is special: is the only one that supports life.
(permite que haya vida)
c. Gases: nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapour.
d. The three closest (más cercanas) layers in the atmosphere:
 Troposphere: closest to the Earth. The weather occurs
here. Contains the air we breathe. (La más cercana. Los
fenómenos atmosféricos ocurren aquí. Contiene el aire que respiramos)
 Stratosphere: protect us from the Sun rays (protección del Sol). Planes fly here.
 Mesosphere: protects us from falling objects from space. (Protección de objetos del
espacio)

2. THE WEATHER
a. State of the atmosphere at a certain place and time. (Estado de la atmósfera en un momento y sitio
concreto)
b. Elements of weather:
 Temperature: measured in degrees with a thermometer. (grados centígrados)
The temperature can be hot (high temperature) or cold (low temperature).
 Humidity: amount of water vapour in the air. (cantidad de vapor de agua)
We measure humidity with the hygrometer.
When there’s a lot of humidity, clouds and fog can be formed.
 Wind: Air moving from one place to another. Breeze, gale, hurricane. (Brisa, vendaval/galerna,
huracán). The wind is measured with the anemometer/wind gauge.
 Precipitation: water falling from the atmosphere, solid (snow and hail) or liquid (rain).
Precipitation is measured with the rain gauge.

3. AIR POLLUTION
a. Pollution contaminates the air we breathe.
b. CAUSES:
 Natural causes: volcano eruption, dust storms (tormentas de polvo) and wildfires.
 Human causes: factories, vehicles, chemicals, spraycan (aerosoles).
c. EFFECTS:
 On humans: headaches (dolores de cabeza), nasal irritation and lung
diseases (enfermedades pulmonares).
 On animals: skin infections (Infecciones de la piel), breathing
problems.
 On plants: acid rains (Lluvia ácida)
 On the atmosphere: global warming (calentamiento global)
d. REDUCE AIR POLLUTION: Plant a tree, use paper bags, switch of the lights,
reduce, reuse, recycle, walk, ride a bike or take a bus
