Water - Displacement - Practice - 1012 3
Background: A graduated cylinder is an instrument used to find the volume. Sometimes objects have irregular shapes
and it is hard to find their volumes. One method to find the volume of irregular shaped objects is water displacement.
An example of water displacement is taking a graduated cylinder with 10 mL of water and dropping in an irregular
object (AA DURACELL BATTERY). The new volume reads 15 mL. This shows a 5 mL volume increase. To find the objects
volume you take the final volume minus the initial volume.
Example.
= 5 mL volume difference
2. What is the formula for finding the volume of an irregular shaped object? ______________________
Directions: Use the given volume of the cylinder BELOW to find the volume for objects in 3-6
