To be more specific, the start is blocked upon the following conditions: + Start air pressure to low to start the engine. (Start block) + Both RPM detector systems failed. (Start block) + Engine tripped (shut down, overspeed or em'cy stop) (Start block) + (Project specified function or spare) (Start block) + Governor not connected to fuelrack. (Engine not ready) + Start air valve blocked (Engine not ready) «Start air distributor blocked (Engine not ready) + Turing gear engaged. (Engine not ready) * (Project specified function or spare) (Engine not ready) The control room unit has separate alarm lamps for all this items, on the bridge, there are group alarm lamps for "start block”, "engine not ready", and separate lamp for "start air pressure low". Start block are reset when the bridge handle is set to stop position, or when the pushbutton "reset start block” are operated on the control room unit. AC4 MAN B&W Version ~ Functional Specification 12 Kongsberg Maritime AS Doc. no.: AO-15504-A / 17-Febr.-05 KONGSBERG 3.23 Slow turning (Option) If the engine has been stopped for a certain time (normally 30 minutes), the first start will include one revolution with slow turning of the main engine. When a start order is, given from bridge (by setting the bridge lever from stop to any position ahead (or astern)) the slow turning valve will be activated, and a limited amount of starting air will be supplied to the main engine, the engine will rotate slowly on starting air. When one revolution is completed, the engine will be started in a normal way, as described in item 3.2.4, Slow turing lamp will be lit on the control room and bridge unit. If one revolution with slow turning is not accomplished within a adjustable time, alarm “slow turning failure" in control room and "start failure" on bridge will lit, and audible alarm is released. Slow tuming may be cancelled by operating the “cancel slow tuming" or "cancel limitation” pushbutton on the bridge unit. 324 Normal starting Starting of the main engine is performed when the bridge lever are moved from stop to any position in ahead (or astern direction). The system will activate the starting air solenoid valve, and starting air is supplied to the engine. System will at the same time give a fixed starting-speedsetpoint to the governor. When the engine speed has reached the start-air / fuel change over level, starting air will be switched off, and fuel will be supplied. ‘The starting speedsetpoint will be kept for 6 second (adjustable), then the speedsetpoint to the governor will be adjusted in accordance with the setpoint of the bridge lever. 325 Restarting If the engine fails to start (run on fuel) after the starting air is switched off, the system will automatically try to restart the engine. Lamps for "repeated starts” will lit on bridge and in control room. The starting speedsetpoint to the governor will at the second (and third) starting attempt be higher (heavy start), and the fuel limiters for scavenge air and torque in the governor will be cancelled. If the second start also fails, the system will try once more. After 3 starting attempts, start fail alarm will be released as indicated in item 5.1.5 3.2.6 Starting failure Starting failure is detected when one of the following conditions occures, and is indicated by separate alarm lamps in control room, and group alarm "start fail" and "start too long” on bridge. + 3 failed starts * Start too long * Slow turning failure AC4 MAN B&W Version — Functional Specification B Kongsberg Maritime AS Doc. no.: AO-15504-A / 17-Febr.-05 KONGSBERG The alarm "start too long” will be released if the engine are unable to reach the start air / fuel change level within a specific time period. Start failure are reset by setting the bridge handle to stop, or by operating the pushbutton "reset start block" in control room. 3.2.7 Speed setting The engine are speed are controlled automatically by simply setting the bridge handle in the correct position for the required engine speed. The bridge handle setpoint are displayed in the "COMMAND RPM" display on bridge, and from parameter 55 on the contro] room unit. 3.2.8 Manoeuvring For maneuvering, the bridge handle has the following divisions. Ahead: Slow - Slow - Half - Full - Max. Ahead Stop Aster: Slow - Slow - Half - Full - Max. Aster The RPM setpoint for each lever position can be programmed individually. It is also possible to obtain stepless mode by tuming the handle knob 90° counter clockwise. Fine tuning is done by operating the lever in stepless mote, and watching the RPM COMMAND display until the required RPM setpoint appears in this display. The RPM setpoint is transferred from the bridge lever, to the AC4 bridge unit, to the AC4 control room unit, and then to the governor. 3.2.9 Seagoing (load program) ‘Seagoing position (MCR) is obtained by selecting steppless mode by turning the bridge handle knob 90° counter clockwise, and then to set the bride handle to maximum ahead position. The RPM will then gradually be increased from full maneuvering speed upto maximum RPM (MCR). During this period the lamps "load up" on bridge and "load program" in control room will lit. Normal time for load up is 30 minutes (adjustable). When MCR are obtained, the lamps for load up/load program will extinguish. When entering port, it is recommended to have a load down program. ‘The load down program is automatically activated when the bridge handle is set from max. ahead to full ahead position. The lamps "load down" on bridge and “load program" in control room will lt, and the speed is gradually reduced over a time period of 15 minutes (adjustable). When full maneuvering speed is obtained, the lamps extinguish. If the bridge lever are set to a position below "full ahead” before the load down program is finished, the program will automatically be cancelled. If max. ahead are ordered before the load down program are finished, the load up program will be activated, but with a different starting point, depending on the time frame from the previous max. ahead order. The load up program time will be shorter than normal, depending on this time frame. Itis possible to cancel the load program (both up and down) by operating the pushbutton “cancel load program" or "cancel limitations" on bridge unit. The control room panel AC4 MAN B&W Version ~ Functional Specification 14 Kongsberg Maritime AS Doe. no.: AO-15504-A / 17-Febr-05 eee has lamps indicating that this pushbuttons are activated ("limitation cancelled” and "load program cancelled" 3.2.10 Speedsetting limitation It is possible to limit the speedsetting from bridge from the AC4 control room unit. This is done by selecting parameter 9 on the control room unit, and then to adjust to the required speedset limit is displayed in the value display. This function is also called for “chief limit". If the bridge command is higher than the "chief limit" the lamps "manual, RPM limit" on bridge and in control room will it. 3.2.11 Critical RPM avoidance In order to avoid operation of the main engine in critical (or barred) speed areas, there are provided a quick-pass function. If bridge command are within this areas, the lamps “critical RPM limit" on bridge and in control room will lit. The system will during acceleration keep the engine running at the lower critical speed, during de-accelration it will keep the engine running at the upper limit. There are provided two different critical RPM avoidance areas. Speedset signal Upper limit Barred speedrange Lover limit Bridge handle position 3.2.12 Slow down Slow down are detected by the safety system. The safety system sends signal to the 'AC4 remote control system. The remote control system will first give a prevarning alarm by activating a alarm lamp in bridge panel for "slow down cancellable" or "slow down none cancellable". None cancellable slowdowns will act immidiately, while cancellable slowdowns will act after a preset timelag. It will be possible during this timelag to cancel the slowdown by pressing the "cancel slow down" pushbutton on bridge unit. When the slow down are activated, lamp "slow down activated” will lit on bridge unit, and the speed setpoint will be redued to the slow down level, normally corresponding to dead slow (adjustable). It will be possible to adjust main engine speed in the area between minimum run and slow down level. Slow down is resetted automatically, when the slow down signal goes off. AC4 MAN B&W Version ~ Functional Specification 15 Kongsberg Maritime AS Doe. no.: AO-15504-A / 17-Febr.-05 KONGSBERG 3.213 Stopping ‘The engine are stopped automatically simply by setting the bridge handle to STOP position. The stop solenoid valve is activated, and stop signal is given to governor to set the fuelrack in zero position. As a back up for the stop function, emergency stop switch are provided on the telegraph panel in bridge and control room (and on the engine side control box), which are hardwired directly to safety system. 3.2.14 Reversing The engine are reversed automatically to ahead (or astern) direction from bridge simply by setting the bridge handle from stop to any position in ahead (or astern) direction. The reversing sequenze will be carried out prior to the starting sequenze. If the engine are running above the brake air level, brake air will be supplied in order to perform the reversing sequenze as fast as possible. 32.15 Crash maneuvering Crash maneuvering means quick reversing of the engine, used in emergency situation, when the bridge lever are moved from full ahead to full astern position. ‘The sequence works as follows. + Crash maneuvering order are given by moving the bridge lever from full ahead to full astern position. Lamp "crash aster” on bridge and control room unit will lit, Stop signal will be given to main engine. The engine will be reversed, and brake air will be supplied. Heavy start speedsetpoint and cancel limiters signals will be given to the governor. When the speed reaches the fuel/start air changelevel in astemn direction, the startair will be switched off, and fuel will be supplied. 3.2.16 Rough sea mode (option) The roughs sea mode is optionally provided in order to avoid overspeed trip during rough sea conditions. A pushbutton for selecting rough sea mode are provided on the ‘AC4 bridge panel, and as well as on the safety system. When rough sea mode is selected, and overspeed is detected, the following sequence take place. © When the engine speed reaches the overspeed level, the fuel will be cut-off, the engine speed will decrease. + When the engine speed reaches a adjustable reset level, fuel will be supplied, and the engine will slowly resume its previous speed. There are also a upper speed limiter provided for this function, this limit is adjustable. The reason for this upper limit, is simply that it is not so wise to try to operate with maximum load in rough sea condition. This to avoid fluctuation between overspeed, then reset, then overspeed, etc. This situation is not so good for main engine. MAN B&W does not recommend to use this function, however it is provided as an option. AC4 MAN B&W Version ~ Functional Specification 16 Kongsberg Maritime AS Doc. no.: AO-15504-A / 17-Febr.-05 KONGSBERG 3.2.17 Shaft generator control mode (option) When shaft generator (PTO) is provided with a constant frequency gear (CFR), an optional function in the remote control system are available in order to avoid black out during gradually speed reduction and slow down. ‘A input signal from the main switchboard "shaft generator in service” should be connected to the remote control system. The remote control system will give out signal “request for diesel generator starting & disconnection of shaft generator”. When shaft generator is connected to the switchboard, the engine speed should be above a certain level (normally 75% of MCR, adjustable). If speed command is ordered below the lowest working level for shaft generator, from the bridge handle, or because of slow down, the following sequence take place: + The speed will rapidly be decreased to shaft generator minimum working level. «Lamps "RPM holding" in bridge and control room will lit. «Signal "request for diesel generator starting & disconnection of shaft generator” will be given to the main switchboard. + Speed will be kept at the shaft generator minimum working level until signal "shaft ‘generator in service” goes off, or maximum 60 seconds (adjustable). + After the signal "shaft generator in service" extinguish, the speed will be reduced to the required level (bridge handle requirements or slow down level). ‘The same sequence applies when STOP or CRASH MANEUVERING order are given. For shut down and emergency stop, the system will immediately stop the engine, resulting in a black-out. 3.2.18 Serial communication The AutoChief 4 remote control system uses serial communication (4 wires current Joop) as communication between the bridge and control room, to order printer, safety system and alarm system (DataChief C20, if provided). Communication speed is 9600 Baud. This means substantial saving in cables comparing with a conventional system. 3.2.19 Error checking & self monitoring facility The AC 4 remote control system has a built in error checking and self monitoring facility, alarm is given if any of the below mentioned faults are detected. + Internal watch-dog, covering CPU, memory circuits and other main circuits. + Voltage failure for SV, 1SV and 24V control voltage incl. low voltage. + Cable failure (communication failure) between bridge and control room. © Cable failure (communication failure) between remote control system and safety system, order printer (option) and alarm system (if DC-2000 is provided) + Cable failure to ahead, astern, start & stop solenoid valves. © Cable failure, and abnormal failure for RPM detector signals + Abnormal or missing control position signal.
